Because Boston Light was destroyed in the Revolution and rebuilt in 1783, the tower itself is the nation's second oldest.
Boston was the maritime center of America in colonial days, and there were other lighted beacons in the area before the first Boston Light.
In 1859 Boston Light was raised to its present height of 89 feet and a new lantern room was added along with a 12-sided second order Fresnel lens.

The Beacons gained possession with seven seconds left in the game and took a timeout, but were unable to score as Schoonmaker stole the ball to seal UMass Boston’s fate.
The Beacons owned a 54-43 lead with 13:47 left to play in the second half, before the Rams reeled off 11 straight points, capped by a three-point play, including a free throw, from Peter Thompson, who scored seven points during the run to pull Suffolk even at 54-54 with 9:15 remaining in the contest.

The UMass Boston men's lacrosse team responded to a season-opener loss by reeling off 11 consecutive victories to close the regular season.
Disappointingly, the Beacons were left out of post-season competition‹this despite the fact that they had the second best won-lost record in New England and a better record than 90 of the 95 teams in NCAA Division III; and were third in the nation in defense.

The Beacons then pulled their goalie with three minutes remaining and found the back of the net twice with goals by freshmen Kelly Maloney and Kelly Rowe, cutting the deficit to 7-6 with 2:07 left in regulation.

The Beacons jumped ahead 1-0 in the first on a AJ Carthas tally 1:20 into the contest and the Hawks looked listless, managing just 6 shots in the period.
Frank scored what looked to be a stake in the heart of the Beacons, stealing a pass while the Hawks were shorthanded and scored on a clean breakaway at the 15:36 mark.

On a very soggy and muddy field, the MIT Beavers lost their only non-conference game to the UMass Boston Beacons 18­14 Saturday afternoon, after a controversial call in the last 15 seconds gave the Beacons the ball at the Beavers' two.
The Beacons got on the board first as the result of a strong first-quarter drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown run four minutes into the second quarter.
The Beacons were able to get an apparent fourth time-out: officials stopped the clock when the Beacons called for one more than they had.

Fitchburg State got a pair of goals near the end from Jason Ledo and Rob Concannon, but the Beacons finished the scoring with a goal from Julian Giantonio.

The football team defeated the University of Massachusetts at Boston Beacons by a score of 48-32 Saturday at Steinbrenner Stadium, despite a 237-yards rushing, four-touchdown performance by UMass player Rich Mroz that included the two longest plays from scrimmage in their school history.
After a Beaver drive failed on downs at the Beacon 14-yard line and a small 2-yard run, Mroz scored the first of his three touchdowns on a sweep to the left for an 84-yard run with 2:44 left in the quarter.
