Few characters in the field of Lincolniana are more genuinely strange than Thomas P. “Boston” Corbett (1832-?), a cavalryman with Company L of the 16th New York Cavalry who claimed he fired the shot that killed John Wilkes Booth on the night of April 24, 1865.
The bizarre Corbett tale took another strange twist in 1905 in Dallas, when a man claiming to be him was tried for perjury on October 16 in the U.S. District Court in San Angelo, Texas and sentenced the next day to three years’ hard labor in the federal penitentiary in Atlanta and a $100 fine.
His age is recorded as 50 (Corbett would have been 73 in 1905), his residence as Ohio (where Corbett never lived), his occupation as trapper (Corbett’s supposed venison-supplying career comes close).
