 Getting Around Boston
Boston is served by Amtrak at South Station and Back Bay Station, which accomodates frequent departures for and arrivals from New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. South Station is also the eastern terminus of Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited train, which travels daily between Boston and Chicago by way of Albany, Rochester, Buffalo, and Cleveland.
Boston's public transportation system, the T is superlative; it is easy and inexpensive and can get you quickly from one end of the city to another or from Boston to Cambridge or other outlying towns.
Most of Boston was laid out long before the automobile, so streets--particularly in older neighborhoods such as Beacon Hill and the West End--can lose their charm when you're a driver frustrated by the lack of parking.

 Northeast_Corridor
Amtrak's New York City passenger operations were moved from Grand Central Terminal and consolidated at Pennsylvania Station, which it owns.
By 1931, the decision had been made to extend the electrification south to Washington, D.C. The installation of the catenary and wires was completed all the way to Union Station in Washington D.C. in 1935, forming the southern section of today's NEC.
Amtrak assumed ownership of most of the Northeast Corridor, which accounts for much of its ridership, from the bankrupt Penn Central in 1976.

 Destination : Freedom - Oct 23, 2000
Amtrak started out on a shoestring, having inherited a lot of equipment that was dilapidated, operating in the east on railroads that had gone broke, in part precisely because they could not support passenger service while also maintaining the infrastructure.
Amtrak's operating rights on the corridor would not be infringed, said the council staff, adding it would be important that the plant be maintained to support safe operation of up to 150 mph service.
Amtrak has already said that of the estimated $12 billion to improve the NECFP over 25 years, the states would be expected to cough up $6 billion.

 Back to Boston
South Station, Boston, MA to Union Station, New Haven, CT
Coming out of the New London station, I was able to look north along the New England Central's rails, and saw several freight cars parked in the small yard there, with a lashup of three NEC locomotives moving slowly north, probably bound for the head of its train, or possibly still switching.
At Route 128 station, I saw that the new platforms now have roofs, although the stairs and what appears to be a shops area are still mostly frames.

 The Boston Traveler, Part I
However, I recently had occasion to spend an extended period of time in the Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge at Boston’s South Station (see next week's column) and was inspired to finally write the Boston column, three weeks worth.
Boston, Massachusetts, is the origination point for the Lake Shore Limited, which terminates in Chicago, and for the Acela Express and Regional lines, which terminate in Washington D.C. I have already written about the Acela Express and will provide a fuller update soon.
Although I live in Maine, Boston is my city of departure whenever I take Amtrak, so I suppose I just take it for granted, and don’t feel as if I’m visiting when I go there.

Philadelphia is home to Thirtieth Street Station, a major rail station that offers access to Amtrak and SEPTA lines.
It is one of the oldest cities of the country (dates from 1681) and, as the original capital and then-largest city of the United States, at one time eclipsed Boston, Massachusetts and New York, New York in political and social importance.
Philadelphia is well-known for cheesesteaks, a kind of humble culinary masterpiece, made of cheap cheese and slices of meat on a large bun, with various spices and garnishings.

On Track On Line - Trip Boston Mini-Fest

On Track On Line - Trip Korell 2002-12-22
As for me, we were due at South Station at 3:24 PM, and I had to leave at 3:45 PM, only 21 minutes difference.
Only event of note was that one passenger slept past his stop at South Attleboro, the last station in the state, and had to ride with us to Providence.
The AMTRAK routes that use this line are the Empire Service, the New York section of the LAKE SHORE LIMITED, the MAPLE LEAF, the ETHAN ALLEN EXPRESS, and the ADIRONDACK.

 BOSTON, Transportation
South Station is the departure point for the train, therefore giving you the best opportunity of getting a seat.
The main Amtrak route basically follows Interstate 95 going down through Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York City, and Washington, D.C. It goes directly as far south as D.C. and as far west as Philadelphia and sometimes Chicago.
If you are not worried about the train filling up at South Station, which rarely happens, you may pick it up at its next stop, Back Bay Station (no difference in fare).
