Akron in 1846.—The large and flourishing town of Akron, the county-seat, is on the Portage summit of the Ohio canal, at the junction of the Pennsylvania canal, 36 miles from Cleveland and 110 northeast of Columbus.
Those in Summit county were greatly frightened, notwithstanding its having been foretold by some of their squaws, who were not believed and put to death for witchcraft.
On their arrival a meeting of the township was called, and after a thorough investigation it was the unanimous vote, with one exception, that the man alleged to have been murdered now stood alive before them.

All of which has led this area in Boston Township to be grouped as one haunted site and given an evil-sounding name.
The Summit County Hell Town should not be confused with the Richland County Helltown, which is a real place named by the original German settlers; apparently the word "hell" means "light in color" or "clear" in German.
The excellent website Ghosts of Ohio did an impressive job of researching the Hell Town stories, and concluded that the area was first called "Mutant Town" when the federal government bought up the land in the area in 1974 to create the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area.
