 New York State Railroads
It was leased to the Western (Mass.) Railroad, Nov. 18, 1841, for the term of its charter, and later was operated as a part of that road, including the ferry at Albany.
The road was allowed to connect with the Chemung Railroad at Jefferson, and to change its name Sept. 11th, 1852, to Canandaigua and Elmira Railroad; it subsequently became a part of the New York Central system.
In June, 1860, it leased the Saratoga and Schenectady and the Albany and Vermont Railroads.

Albany Area Railroads -- History & Context, Mohawk & Hudson Chapter, National Railway Historical Society   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Railroads dramatically changed the patterns of travel and diverse commerce in New York, as elsewhere in the country, as they opened up markets for agriculture and access to resort areas, and made possible the growth of heavy industries throughout the state.
Albany's roots are as follows: Watervliet Turnpike and RR Company grew out of the Watervliet Turnpike Company (I don't know the exact date but this was formed around 1800 for building the turnpike north from Albany that is now Broadway).
The Albany Southern was an electric interurban railway 37.2 miles in length running from Albany, NY to Hudson, NY and it carried both passengers and freight.

 The Railroad
The records, going back to the year 1852, show that the Boston and Albany Railroad operated a line from Boston to Brookline, and in that year the Charles River Railroad was started from Brookline to Needham, controlled by the New England Railroad, now part of the New Haven system.
In 1885 the Boston and Albany Railroad purchased a portion of this line from Brookline to Newton Highlands (totalling five and one-tenth miles) for $415,000.
There were two railroad stations in the Newton Highlands district, one at the present site of the station, another about one-third of a mile west, known as Cook Street, at the junction of the present New Haven, just east of the fire station located on the Worcester turnpike.

 South Station
Another of the original railroads that made up the Boston Terminal Company, the Boston and Albany Railroad, came about in l867 when the Boston and Worcester Railroad merged with the Western Railroad.
Yet, the Boston and Albany is perhaps as well known for beautifying the system as for connecting east and west.
During the times when the railroads began servicing more and more commuters and the outskirts of Boston began to develop, the Boston and Albany line was faced with a need to invest surplus profits.

Inner Belt Expressway (I-695 and I-95, unbuilt)
The Boston and Albany Railroad yard in the foreground was later acquired as part of the right-of-way for the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90).
Ideally, the Inner Belt should be located as close as possible to the major traffic generators in the core area, and yet be of sufficient length to allow connections with the radial expressways, as well as to provide for traffic service to and from local streets.
Planned as the replacement for the Boston University Bridge (a steel-arch span that still stands today), the Inner Belt was to be routed on the upper level, while local traffic was to be routed on the lower level.

 Fixed-Globe Lanterns - Railroadiana Online
Whether or not a railroad used caged lanterns seems to be a matter of geography and lantern manufacturer, than of the time period it was made.
Since most railroads purchased lanterns from local suppliers, New England railroad lanterns tend to be cageless more often than lanterns used elsewhere.
The 1890's are generally considered the end of the fixed globe lantern era, although there is evidence that the Boston and Albany Railroad used such lanterns later than this period.

Louis Railroad, better known as the Nickel Plate Road, by 1916, and when the Interstate Commerce Commission began developing a scheme of railroad consolidation after World War I, the Van Sweringens undertook their own private strategy of consolidation, determined to control one of the major groupings or railroad systems that would emerge.
Two other railroads not controlled by the Van Sweringens and their successors acquired Berkshires of essentially the Nickel Plate design: the Louisville and Nashville and the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac.
Other railroads, such as the Missouri Pacific and the Wheeling and Lake Erie, obtained Berkshires whose design derived either from the Boston and Albany Berkshires or from independent design.
