Boston class cruiser - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1968 both Boston class guided missile heavy cruisers were reclassified back to heavy cruisers (CAs), in part due to the extensive use of their 8-inch guns for shore bombardment during the Vietnam War.
While they had retained their Terrier missiles, the swift advance of technology had made these pioneering weapons obsolete after little more than a dozen years' service, and the ships' main battery were once again their six remaining 8-inch guns in the forward turrets.
In 1970 both Boston class ships were decommissioned for the final time, eventually stricken from the Naval Vessel Register, and sold for scrap.

 Baltimore class
The Baltimore class was the last war-time heavy cruiser class, and certainly the first heavy cruisers that were properly armoured and protected, at least in the U.S. This class looked a lot like the Cleveland class, but its construction was delayed because the light cruisers received more attention.
However, this class was already benefitting from the availability of 127mm L/38 twin mounts, and radar proximity granades for the same.
With the powerful AA armament, of course larger than that of the Cleveland class, thanks to a larger hull, these ships proved to be secondary in their AA performance only to the fast battleships.

 The Battleship Kongo
The consensus of opinion seems to be that the "battle cruiser" was misconceived -- neither fish nor fowl: too much of a battleship to be relegated to cruiser tasks, but too little of a battleship to be hazarded in the line-of-battle.
These cruisers all began to look like miniature battleships and, indeed, it was they that had the speed and range to form lines of battle in most of the significant surface engagements of the Pacific War.
This, without regard to the tonnage, was then called a "light cruiser." The Japanese therefore immediately planned a class of ships, just as large as the "heavy" cruisers, but with fifteen 6 inch guns, in triple turrets, instead of ten 8 inch guns, in double turrets.
