The rapid transit connection running under the harbor between Boston and East Boston would be the first tunnel of its kind in the United States.

Next stop, ad buzz - The Boston Globe
In a first-of-its-kind commercial for Greater Boston, subway riders will see an ad for the Royal Caribbean cruise line take shape outside the windows of Red Line trains as they travel toward downtown Boston.
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority says the tunnel ads could generate nearly $1.5 million a year for the T. Meanwhile, advertisers are seeking new ways to reach the consumer amid a commercial deluge and the arrival of digital video recorders such as TiVo, which entirely sidestep messages from advertisers.
Rob Walker, president of SideTrack, the Canadian company that in January won the contract to install the new advertising system and woo advertisers to the MBTA, said the company is bearing all the costs of installing the technology, including any tunnel repairs that need to be made.

Group Seeks Removal of Alcohol Ads from Boston Subway
A group of Boston-area advocates known as Massachusetts Banding Together Against Alcohol Advertising (MBTAA) is urging the MBTA and its ad agency, Viacom Outdoor, to ban alcohol advertising on bus and train lines, arguing that alcohol ads promote underage drinking and binge drinking.
At least magazine readers can turn the page, and TV viewers can change the channel, she noted; riders in a subway car literally covered in alcohol ads have no similar options.
While allowing ads for alcohol, the agency limits such advertising by requiring that at least 3 percent of the ad space include a statement noting the legal drinking age in Massachusetts and warning of the dangers of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, in connection with the operation of heavy machinery, and while driving.

By If you think mobile phones won't operate underground, you would be wrong: Boston is planning to deliver mobile-phone signals in its subway system, after a study revealed that most riders would use their wireless phones in the tunnels.
Consultants who studied the idea for the subway's operator, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), said riders were more likely to use email and Web access rather than voice functions, because talking would likely annoy other riders.
According to the MBTA, a major part of the expense for underground service would be defrayed by the use of existing optical-fiber lines extending throughout much of Boston's subway lines.
