Professor Botein, who was born and raised in Manhattan and received his B.A. from Wesleyan University in 1966, initially had wanted to do civil rights litigation in Washington, DC and then go into teaching.
Professor Botein has become a well-respected expert in communications law, and a scholarly witness to the unprecedented growth of the cable industry and the Internet, the advent of direct broadcast satellites, and the break-up of ATandT.
Professor Botein is himself regularly invited to speak at law schools around the world, recently consulting with the University of Bogota, Colombia on establishing a media law program there.

Stephen William Botein, a professor of history at Michigan State University, died of a cerebral aneurysm Tuesday as he was preparing for the close of a 10-day seminar at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Mass.
Professor Botein, son of the late State Supreme Court Justice Bernard Botein, was on leave from the university, serving as editor of publications for the Institute of Early American History and Culture in Williamsburg, Va. Earlier, he had been an assistant professor of history at Williams College and at Harvard.
He is survived by his wife, the former Sheila Dawson Read; two daughters, Emily and Hilary, both of Cambridge; his mother, Marian Botein of Manhattan, and a brother, Michael, of South Orange, N.J..
