Botetourt County was established in 1770 from Augusta and Rockbridge counties.
The James River originates in Botetourt County, near the village of Iron Gate, just south of the Allegany County border by the merger of the pristine Cowpasture River and the heavily polluted Jackson River.
In the county, the population was spread out with 23.40% under the age of 18, 5.80% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 28.80% from 45 to 64, and 13.20% who were 65 years of age or older.

The county was formed in 1838 from the southern part of Botetourt County.
In the county, the population was spread out with 22.70% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 27.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who were 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a household in the county was $47,689, and the median income for a family was $56,450.

In 1854, he and William Radford were appointed, probably by the county, as delegates to attend a meeting of the stockholders in the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad due to their being "familiar with the whole subject" and having "knowledge of the Geography" of the area (Preston-Radford Papers).
Louis was a great-great grandson of Colonel William Preston's sister, Letitia Preston Breckinridge, and therefore a distant cousin of Virginia's (Dorman, 122).
In 1910, Virginia, as head of the household, was living at Greenfield with two of her sons, Charles and Samuel, as well as her mother, Lulie.

Family lore, from Ashby and Flo Eakin, of Virginia, and as reported by Lewis Ripley, has that Nathan Eakin's mother's maiden name was Morrison, and that she and five sons came from County Down, Northern Ireland.
Boutetourt County, Virginia Early Settlers, compiled and arranged by Charles T. Burton, published by himself (address given: Rt2 Box191, Troutville, VA 24175) shows Nathan Eakin paying a tax on 50 acres from a new grant in 1782, and in 1785 on 65 acres on Craig's Creek.
Botetourt County, Virginia, It's men, 1780-1786, researched by Charles T. Burton lists Nathan Eakin (Atkins) as assigned to Company 48 in the years 1782, 1783, 1784, 1785, 1786, and paying taxes on 50 acres in 1782, 1785.

It is not know exactly when or why he arrived in Botetourt County, although is it possible that he had visited there if his mother had made visits to her family while living in Baltimore with her second husband, Charles H. Latrobe.
Like other Botetourt farmers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Holladays also raised tomatoes which were sold to the county's many canneries, one of which was owned by George Wilmer Bowyer, Henry Bowyer's son by his second marriage.
By 1920, Virginia's widowed son Thomas and his infant son were living in her household, as were her mother and her step-brother, Hubard Douglass (1920 Census).

Botetourt County was created on 31 Jan. 1770 from the southern lands of Augusta County.
Named for Lord Botetourt (Norborne Berkeley), governor of Virginia, 1768-1779, it encompassed all of Virginia (and West Virginia) west of the Blue Ridge and south of a line through the center of Rockbridge and west.
Alleghany was established in 1822 from portions of Botetourt, Bath, and Monroe Counties; 1838, Roanoke County was cut off, and in 1851 Craig County was formed from parts of Botetourt, Giles, Roanoke, and Monroe counties.

That in the summer of 1781 he served first as a spy against the Indians five days, on the next day after the expiration of said five days he was called on by Captain Doherty to act as spy again for one month, that he served said time out.
That when he as called into the service of the United States he lived in Botetourt County in the said State, that he removed from there to Washington County, Territory of North Carolina now Greene County, State of Tennessee where he has lived ever since.
