Joni Mitchell - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first such album, The Hissing of Summer Lawns (1975), was also a lyrical departure, with the confessional style replaced by a series of vignettes, from nightclub dancers ("Edith and the Kingpin") to the bored wives of the wealthy ("The Hissing of Summer Lawns" and "Harry's House").
Both Sides Now (2000) was an album composed mostly of covers of classic standards, performed with an orchestra.
The album contained reappraisals of "A Case of You" and the title track "Both Sides Now," two early hits transposed down to Mitchell's now-dusky, soulful alto range.

Despite the pedigree of the material the album's triumphs come in Mitchell's refashioning of her own material (1971's poetic "A Case of You" and the reflective 1968 title track popularized by Judy Collins) in moody orchestral jazz style.
This is a rich and wonderful album from an artist whose reputation has far outstripped the quality of her output since her '70s heyday.

Cheekily titled Both Sides Now, after her best-known composition of 1967, this is a collection of old classics and standards, plus two of Mitchell's own songs.
A Case Of You, first heard on her brilliant 1971 album Blue, is rearranged with a brooding string section that makes it even more boldly evocative than the original.
Both Sides Now is the first album in a new trilogy planned by Mitchell and her co-producer (and ex-husband) Larry Klein, the common thread being old songs spun anew in a symphonic setting.

Part of what makes it that way is the very personalized orchestration: it may be Big Band stuff on the surface, but the chord complications and depth of their shifts brings it around into focus as a face of Joni Mitchell, albeit one I don’t think I’d ever seen before.
I think I heard so many other recordings of it back then that I forgot whose it originally was and how it originally sounded...and because of that, with her “Woodstock” in mind (and CSNandY’s masterful redefinition of it on So Far), I’m actually a little scared to get ahold of a copy and play it.
But even though the material she presents here includes both classics of that milieu and two of her own “classics” completely recast into that style, the recording remains Joni at the core...it’s just a different camera angle, a surprising new lighting effect on what’s been there (or developing) all along....

But the six albums that followed her last bona-fide masterpiece, Shadows and Light (1980), however exquisitely crafted, seemed to exist less because they had to be created than because Mitchell could make them.
Both Sides Now comprises 10 standard jazz ballads and two Mitchell classics, the songs sequenced to "trace the arc of a modern romantic relationship," says Klein, who should know.
But Mitchell's vocal style is entirely her own—the pure folk roots of her early albums are as evident here as are the flavors of the jazz singers she's studied in the 30 years since.

 CD review: "Both Sides Now"
Mitchell's latest release, "Both Sides Now," is as good an album of jazz singing as has come down the pike in some time.
And on "At Last," which was given a nearly overpowering stylistic imprint by Etta James in 1961, Mitchell neither pays homage to James nor returns to the earlier versions from the Big Band era, but instead finds a new vein to mine, drawing out more of the often overlooked jazz flavorings of the ballad.
"Both Sides Now" remains, 33 years after she first recorded it, Mitchell's signature song — and while her jazz version of it here can't compete with her still-remarkable original, it does retain its power to enchant in its new format.

Joni Mitchell: Both Sides Now - PopMatters Music Review
Alternately gorgeous and over-the-top, the album is unlikely to win Mitchell new fans among young listeners, but for those who have followed Mitchell's career since the '60s, there are things to admire (and even like) here.
The music is so lush that it overpowers the lyrics, forcing the understated and poetic art of these two songs to battle with the melodramatic leanings of the orchestra at all the wrong moments.
Mitchell's album is far more complex (even when it fails) than, say, Carly Simon's My Romance (1990), an album which took a similar kind of leap into the musical world of near-schmaltz.
