Botolan is one of the 13 municipalities of Zambales named after a kind of banana plant with sweet-seedy fruits called “Boto-an.”
Mayor Rogelio Yap of Botolan said this festivity is part of the effort to revive interest in the Botolanos’ rich cultural heritage and reacquaint the people with their roots.

Pronounced dead on arrival by attending doctors at the Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Hospital (rmmh) in Iba, Zambales, were Arman de la Isla, resident of Barangay Apo-apo, San Felipe, Zambales, and Raul Montes of San Isidro, Subic, Zambales.
Samuel Cudal, admitting section officer of the rmmh said, a total of 17 patients were admitted after the collision.

President Arroyo went to Botolan to visit some of the evacuees and to speak to scientists on the progress of the operations.
He said there was no danger of any erosion of the banks of the canal, or of a dangerous build-up of water pressure.

BOTOLAN, ZAMBALES—The Aetas of Baquillan resettlement are said to be raising some of the sweetest honeydew and watermelon in the country thanks to a livelihood program designed to help displaced minorities due to the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo more than a decade ago.
Recently, Botolan Mayor Rogelio Yap, through the Municipal Agriculture Office launched the “Binhi Program,” a livelihood program, which provides the minorities of Botolan, seedlings of watermelon, camote (sweet potato), gabi, bananas and squash for upland planting.
At least 3,000 Aeta families live at the Baquilan resettlement, which is situated in Barangay Burgos, five kilometers away from Botolan, Zambales.

Botolan, Zambales - At least 18 barangays will be affected when water from the crater of the Mt. Pinatubo starts flowing down at 7 a.m.
According to Zambales Gov. Vicente Magsaysay, the residents will be transported by means of dumptrucks, mini buses, and Victory Liner buses.Pocholo Galian, Victory Liner branch manager for Olongapo and Zambales, said that he will lend 10 buses to the provincial government for the evacuation.
The Department of Educatin office here said it will l suspend all classes in several schools in Iba town which will be used by the evacuees until the situation returns to normal and the affected families go back to their homes.

BOTOLAN, Zambales - Two armed persons -- a man and a woman -- suspected to be New People's Army guerrillas were killed in a one-hour gunbattle with the government forces here.
In a report to police Supt. Artemio Gabriel, Zambales Police Provincial Director said that the two fatalities were identified only as Mayeth Espiritu and a certain Ka Entuy.
Gabriel said that the NPA groupnumbering about 15 took had taken refuge in their hideout due to the inclement weatherwhen they were spotted by the police.

Heeding warnings from a private geologist of a potential catastrophe, army engineers have started building a narrow channel in Mount Pinatubo's crater, to prevent some 210 million cubic metres of water that have accumulated in it from destroying the rim and inundating heavily populated villages at the volcano's base.
Dr Raymundo Punongbayan, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, said yesterday that the construction of a narrow canal to channel the wateraway, would help reduce the risk of flash floods on residents of the town of Botolan in Zambales province.
The water in the lake, which formed in the crater after the June 1991 eruptions, rose an average of two metres a month, a study made by Dr Kelvin Rodolfo of the University of the Philippines showed.
