Topic: Botryoidal

  whatsnew
Botryoidal gems are fashioned into cabochons, carvings or ornamental objects and can be very interesting and lovely.
Furthermore, the lapidary can treat the material in various ways: sometimes the botryoidal surface is left in its natural state, sometimes it is polished and occasionally some or all the the bubbles are flattened to reveal the inner layering.
Botryoidal gems make an interesting sub-collecting area within the gem hobby, and they can be used in beautiful and distinctive jewelry pieces as well.

The coelom is reduced by invasion of mesenchymal botryoidal tissue and connective tissue (Fig 13-72A).
In modern leeches the coelom is represented by the four longitudinal, vessel-like, coelomic channels, tiny coelomic "capillaries" in the botryoidal tissue, and sacs enclosing the gonads.

Turtleback and Botryoidal phenomena in Blue Agate
One of chalcedony's most endearing characteristics is it's tendency to form  botryoidal (grape-like) structures that manifest internally as "turtle-backing" or sometimes externally as "bubble-top" surfaces.
And even some AGATE material appears to be either too coarsely crystalline or too lacking in sufficient translucency to (visibly) "go botryoidal" although this can vary layer to layer or piece to piece even in material from the same location.
And when (rarely) a surface is decorated by nature with well-preserved botryoidal bumps and bubbles that can be polished to perfection........

There are also photos of minerals sprinkeld throughout other sections of the book, showing a number of different habits.
Keep in mind that the word "botryoidal" is simply referring to a type of mineral habit - not any specific mineral.
And keep in mind that these words are really just descriptors, saying the the mineral "looks like" whatever they refer to, such as botryoidal meaning the mineral "looks like a bunch of grapes" or reniform meaning the mineral "looks like kidneys," and so on.
