Botswana abolished foreign exchange controls in 1999, has a low corporate tax rate (15%), no prohibitions on foreign ownership of companies, and a moderate inflation rate (average annual inflation in 2004 was 7%).
The Central Bank devalued the Pula by 12.5% in May 2005 in a bid to maintain export competitiveness against the real appreciation of the Pula and restructured the exchange rate mechanism to a crawling peg system to ensure against future large-scale devaluations.
Botswana is one of the 15 focus countries for PEPFAR, the President's Emergency Plan for Aids Relief and began receiving funding and assistance under this program in January 2004.

Johannesburg - Botswana devalued its pula by 12 percent against a basket of currencies yesterday in a surprise move which the central bank said was in line with its aim of having a "stable and competitive real exchange rate".
A new framework for the pula would also allow the exchange rate to be adjusted continuously rather than in steps, which should encourage the development of a foreign exchange market, said a finance ministry statement carried by the central bank.
Botswana's economy is widely regarded as an African success story, but it is heavily reliant on dollar-based revenues from diamond exports.

Johannesburg - Botswana's central bank on Friday devalued the country's national currency, the pula, by 7.5%, the bank said in a statement.
The pula is pegged to a basket of currencies comprising the rand, the US dollar, the euro and the pound, with weights reflecting Botswana's trading patterns.
A critical element in Botswana's overall exchange rate strategy is to maintain a stable and competitive real exchange rate of the pula, primarily through control of domestic inflation but also, when necessary, by changing the fixed nominal exchange rate of the pula against the basket, the Botswana central bank said.

GABORONE - Bank of Botswana governor Linah Mhohlo has warned that the fundamental appreciation of the Pula against Botswana's major trading partners may have negative consequences.
"It is important to know that if the Pula appreciates significantly against its trading partners we run the risk of 'only purchasing' from the world not selling to the world," she said.
"There are some people who think the Pula should appreciate against trading partners and others think that it should weaken to suit their objectives," said Mhohlo, adding that the business of the bank was to balance the two and come up with a decision that would benefit the economy.
