Bottle cage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bottle cage is a bicycle accessory used to affix a water bottle to the bike.
Composed of plastic, aluminum, stainless steel, or carbon, it is attached to the main frame of a bicycle, the handlebars, or behind the saddle.
Some examples of bicycle lighting take advantage of the bottle cage by using it to hold a bottle-shaped battery to power the lights.

Rivendell Catalog - Nitto Water Bottle Cage
If a water bottle cage can be beyond words, this one is. It holds securely in any position, and we believe there is no finer (or better) cage made.
Please note: If you are using this (or any) cage on the underside of the downtube, you will be better off strapping the bottle in with a toe strap to keep it from working loose or breaking the cage.
Cages were not really design to take the kinds of forces that you get with the underside mounting, so it is a good idea to give it that extra support.

2006 Arundel Sideloader Carbon Fiber Bottle Cage :: Competitive Cyclist
Small bikes and compact frames of all sizes have long been troublesome with their difficulty in allowing you to pull a bottle from a water bottle cage.
Rather than forcing you to pull (or attempt to pull) your bottle fully upward, its minimalist profile allows you to pull the bottle up just a bit, then to move it outward to prevent the top of the bottle from smacking the bottom of the top tube.
And, truth be told, the cage has such a neatly sculpted shape that many folks choose the Sideloader for looks alone.

Nalgene water bottle cage? - Dirt Rag Forums
That cage is going to have to be pretty beefy and solid to keep that on the bike and not have the cage unravel like a sweater caught on a nail.
The bigger Nalgene bottles are about 4" in diameter and about the same height as a 20oz standard bottle and a standard water bottle is 2.75" in diameter, so that bigger bottle does provide a lot more leverage applied to the wire cage.
A wire cage would have to be extra stiff to hold the bottle in the cage.

Steven M. Scharf's World Famous Bicycle Coffee Systems
Ensure that the water bottle cage will have sufficient clearance for the coffee bottle (or water bottle) you plan to use, especially if you want to use one of the larger bottles such as the JSB-700 (but there are large water bottles as well that need to be considered).
A lot of accessories need a bottle cage, or bottle cage mounts, so it is a good idea to buy a bicycle that has at least two sets of mounts, or add additional mounts by the use of various cage mounting accessories.
Some of these bottles keep the coffee extremely hot for a long period of time and if someone other than the person that filled the bottle were to use it without being aware how hot the beverage was they could suffer serious burns in their mouth.

You should be able to pull the water bottle from its cage with only a bit of a shoulder dip and slight bend in your arm.
It is unfortunate that the bottle reach dimension is not included in most frame geometry charts so you will have to use trial and error to determine the proper size bicycle.

After getting both cages installed, I slid in my NiteRider water bottle battery and noticed that the bottle cage bolts extended beyond the support for the cages such that the water bottle rested on the bolt head.
I then inspected the Elite Ciussi stainless cages that I had just taken off and they have a much deeper space for the bolt heads to reside without getting in way of the bottle.
2nd part of the rattle is that the cage mounted on the down tube holds the water bottle away from the tube mounted edge so that there is a space between the water bottle and the cage.
