Topic: Bottle variation

In the News (Mon 28 Dec 09)

  chap11d
Variations of white on blue ACL bottles were probably in use from at least the mid-1940s (possibly as early as the late 1930s) in eight- and twelve-ounce sizes.
Variations 3 and 4 may have been the earliest of the three variations due to their similarities to the previous bottle with an entirely embossed label.
Bottles of this type were used from 1941 to the mid-1950s when they were replaced with colorless containers enameled with white and green labels on the upper body front.

Bottle variation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bottle variation is the degree to which different bottles, nominally of the same wine, taste and smell different.
Bottles aged in the chilly cellars of Sweden's alcohol monopoly are famous for tasting younger than the same wine stored at a more typical 13 °C (55 °F).
However, a corked wine would be described as a simple fault rather than bottle variation, even though the corked bottle would be clearly different from a non-corked example.

Bottle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bottle is a small container with a neck that is narrower than the body and a "mouth." Bottles are often made of glass, plastic or aluminum, and typically used to store liquids.
The glass bottle was an important development in the history of wine, because, when combined with a high-quality stopper such as a cork, it allowed long-term aging of wine.
The bottles were filled upside down, and pressure of the gas in the bottle forced the marble against the washer, sealing in the carbonation.

The bottle is largely responsible as the unit of preservation, transport and consumption.
Although in normal storage bottled wine is kept in semi-darkness, it will inevitably be subjected to illumination which, depending on the colour of the glass, may have some effect on the stability of the wine.
For the ageing of red wine strongly-coloured bottles, verging on opaque, chromatic models no longer fashionable, are more convenient than those with green or bluishgreen tones and this is evident in the taste and aromas of aged wine.

Gourd, Bottle -- Lagenaria siceraria (Mol.) Standl.
The bottle gourd probably originated in Africa and from there was widely distributed in pre-Columbian times, perhaps by floating on the seas.
The bottle gourd flowers are borne singly on the axils of the leaves, the males on long peduncles and the females on short peduncles.
Bottle gourd is likely to be attacked by powdery mildew, mosaic virus, fusarium wilt, and fruit rots.

A bottle is a small container with a neck that is narrower than the body and a "mouth." Bottles are often made of glass or plastic, and typically used to store liquids.
The Codd-neck bottle, as it was called, had a marble and a rubber washer in the neck, with which the pressure of the gas in the bottle forced the marble against the washer, sealing in the carbonation.
At the time of its introduction, the bottle was extremely popular with the soft drink and brewing industry, though alcohol drinkers disdained the use of the bottle (it is this thought that some credit as the origin of the term codswallop).

Bulk Versus Bottle Aging - WinePress.US Wine Making and Grape Growing Forum
Bulk and bottle aging are different processes, bulk aging is not as much about aging as it is about giving the wine time to go thru various chemical processes after fermentation.
Otherwise, once the wine is in the bottle, the bottle size will influence aging and yes, the larger the bottle the slower the aging process and the longer the wine will keep.
Whites are not released until they are in bottle at least 4-6 weeks (bottle shock), but usually are in bottle longer until the prior vintage is sold out.

 Screwcap Initiative - Why Screwcap?
Yes - the ageing of wine in a bottle is a function of the natural chemical characters in the wine and will occur over time - irrespective of the bottle closure.
No bottle variation - each bottle of a given wine will be just as good as the one before.
To open a bottle you simply twist the whole capsule to break the seal, and then unscrew the top (no corkscrews to manipulate, no crumbly corks to extract), and if you don't finish your wine that night, you can happily reseal the bottle for the next day.

This, unfortunately, is not the case due to TCA, TBA, 2MPM and variable permeability from natural corks; these lead to bottle variation.
On all the bottling lines I have worked on there is a vacuum between the bottom of the cork and the surface of the wine that is usually rated at 0 to -2 psi, thus there is no air to "piston" into the wine.
If your closure is at the top of the bottle instead of the bottom of the cork (one and-a-half inches or so inside the bottle), you will have more air in the bottle that has the same fill height.
