Bougarabou - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Bougarabou (alternative spelling “Boucarabou”) is a set of three to four drums commonly used in West Africa.
Until the last few decades the Bougarabou was played only one at a time, usually with one hand and a stick, but in the last generation or two (since the 1940s), possibly influenced from congueros in the western hemisphere, players play multiple drum setups.
The drum is originally from the Jola (Jóola) people in the south of Senegal, the Casamance and the Gambia, the Jóola Buluf, the Jóola Fogny and the Jóola Kalunai.

 bougarabou
Bougarabou is a centuries-old tradition that continues to develop.
In Bougarabou drumming, these two roles are fused and, thus, the challenge for a drummer like Badjie is to maintain a deep and steady groove and, at the same time, spice up the rhythm so as inspire the dancers.
It is an excellent introduction to the Bougarabou tradition that hasn’t received the attention its deserves; it is a tradition that djembe players and drummers in general should find both novel and inspiring.

Carved with solid dembu log and headed with cow hide, the Bougarabou can be played as a single drum or in a set of up to four.
The sound of this drum is somewhat similar to that of a conga drum, but the tonal range is broader and filled with authentic African Spirit.

Bougarabou drumming is an anomaly within the general constellation of African drumming.
How the djembe and the bougarabou are different: the djembe [which these days is a nearly omnipresent phenomenon in the U. S.] is goblet-shaped, with a drumhead of goatskin, which gives it its high almost barking type sound.
By contrast, the bougarabou has a drumhead of cow skin, and thus a mellower sound (timbre), more akin to that of the familiar barrel-shaped conga drums, but even more articulate than they, probably due to the particular amplification qualities of its conical shape.

IRIE TONES - ABOUT THE BOUGARABOU
The bougarabou is traditionally made with a shaved antelope or calf skin head.
The bougarabou is traditionally played with the bare hands only, even though antelope skin is is strong enough to be struck with a beater.
We import our bougarabous with the head already in place and tightened, though not to the point where the skin may burst while in transport.

Though the title says "Solo Drumming," these performances by Saikouba Badjie, member of the Jola people of Senegal's Casamance region, are as full of music as they are bursting with life.
A four-cut improvisation is the centerpiece of this pristinely recorded disc and works as a kind of history of bougarabou drumming.
Saikouba begins with a single drum, then progresses to four, just as the popular style of the region escalated from a single drum to three and often four by the 1970s, possibly in response to the popularity of Cuban drumming styles.

 Spirit in the Wood Bougarabou
The Bougarabou is a traditional west African drum with a history that probably pre-dates the Djembe.
The internal shape is more like a Conga, plus bougarabou's have heaver heads (this one is Zebra), compared to the thin goat skins on most Djembes.
In the traditional manner, the hair is left intact on Bougarabous which makes for a very hand friendly drum, and makes the sound even more round and rich.

Saikouba Badjie is a bougarabou drummer from Senegal who earns his living playing at different kinds of festivities in local Jola communities in Senegal and The Gambia.
Originally, the bougarabou was played with hand and stick, and the drummer used only one drum, but since the 1970s, the bougarabou drummers have been playing on four drums using both hands.
This extremely demanding type of music is demonstrated here by Saikouba Badjie, who plays five long improvisations on a varying number of drums, and in addition, some of the signal rhythms connected with dancing and rhythm, praising the wife of the chief of Abuko, where the recording took place.

Our Bougarabou are hand-carved and dyed and adjustable by the musician through the manipulation of cords that tighten and loosen the head.
The Bougarabou is similar in construction to the djembe, and probably evolved as a form of that famous drum.

The Jola people of Casamance say that the bougarabou drum first came to them in a dream.
The bougarabou is a relative of the djembe, with some important differences.
Another significant difference is that while djembe music (and most West African drum music, for that matter) is played by groups of drummers with one person per drum, bougarabou music is played by one drummer, performing on up to four drums at once, accompanied only by the singing and clapping of the dance circle.
