Bouldering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bouldering is a type of climbing undertaken without a rope and is normally limited in respect to the height the climber ascends the route so that any fall will not risk significant injury.
For many years, bouldering was usually practiced as training for climbers, although, in the 1930s and late 1940s, Pierre Allain and his companions enjoyed bouldering for its own sake in Fontainebleau.
Bouldering is continually gaining in popularity, partly as evidenced by the growth of bouldering areas in indoor climbing gyms and even entire climbing gyms dedicated to bouldering.

Bouldering mat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bouldering mat or crash pad is basically a small mattress used for protection when bouldering.
There are various sizes and makes, but the most common type is a folded mattress, 8 to 10 centimetres thick (3 to 4 inches), that when unfolded measures about 1 x 1.3 metres (3 x 4 feet).
Its main use is to protect your feet when falling from between four and five metres.

 What is bouldering?
Bouldering is a form of rock climbing practiced close to the ground, eliminating the need for ropes and other expensive equipment.
Bouldering began when climbers practiced on the foot of crags and nearby boulders between 'proper' rock climbs, but was soon so popular it became a discipline in its own right.
International competitions are held, at which UK boulderers have been very successful, and guidebooks are available for bouldering areas across the world.

 Castle Hill - New Zealand
Bouldering is a simple form of rock climbing up cliffs which are usually about five or so meters high.
Boulder problems can sometimes be only a few meters high and still produce enough strenuous climbing for several hours of exertion and fun.
To prevent injury you can use a bouldering mat to soften the fall, but it is still possible to fall awkwardly and injure yourself.

Bouldering & Climbing Primer and Links
Bouldering is the art of free-climbing improbable rocks, glacial erratics, etc. whether it be a remote desert locale at Joshua Tree, a rock in the "Gunks," or a large decorative stone at a shopping center.
Not surprisingly, a few boulderers sometimes attempt "problems" well beyond the reach of their spotter, and rely on mats that do very little to protect falling skeletal structures from sudden stops on level portions of the planet.
Sometimes the line between bouldering and climbing blurs, but the general rule is that if the rock isn't an intrinsic part of the mountain, or if you can fall without being killed, it counts as a boulder.

If a mat is present then realy your probably bouldering as a fall from a decent solo climb would buger you up mat or not, unless you are just starting up it.
For pure unprotected climbing, mats have to be considered some sort of pro, or else I could have one of those massive stunt mats that they fall out of buildings onto(how good would that be), under a climb and still think it's solo.
With bouldering you plan on falling, you generally have mats, spotters etc, you may not want to fall but you take it into consideration, with soloing it is completely out of the equation.

The Megagrip Bouldering Mat is the best mat on the market because we use two superior grade shock absorbent materials, a combination of high impact open cell foam and high impact closed cell foam.
The mat has a shoulder-carrying strap so it can be strung over a climbers shoulder, enabling the climber to use a rucksack at the same time.
The outer is robust Astro-Pack abrasion resistant, water resistant nylon, but the best thing is that the mat retails at £75.00 making it £25.00 cheaper than its rivals in the UK (and it is a superior product).

For those who are unfamiliar with the science of bouldering pads the principle is that a heavy object hitting the mat (you) will first encounter a piece of high density foam which spreads the impact onto the lower density piece beneath.
In practice the mat was awesome; not so stiff that it bruised your ankles, but stiff enough to give a solid bit of feedback.
The mat has an assortment of plastic D-rings to clip these clips to, either as a long shoulder strap, or, if you feed the strap through a heavy duty Velcro’d loop on the back of the pad, doubled as a fairly set of comfortable rucksack straps.

I have bought a second hand BD bouldering mat and would like to replace the foam in it.
Bouldering mats are constructed with 3, 4 or sometimes even 5 layers of shock absorbing closed-cell foam decreasing in density the further you look into the mat, thus creating an impact absorbtion buffer that acts a bit like a crumple zone on a car in a high speed head-on.
I've opened up my mat and it has two different layers of foam in it, so I had better use a professional I think, but then again I only use the mat to keep sand off of my shoes and for sit starts, so its maybe not that imprortant.

This is the firmer of the two foams, it has the effect of distributing the impact of a fall accross the surface area of the mat for greater cushioning and reducing the chance of bottoming out.

 Spotting (climbing)
Spotting is a techniques used in climbing, especially in bouldering, where the climbers are close to the ground and ropes are not typically used.
If the climber falls, the spotter does not catch the climber, but redirects the climber's fall so that they land safely on a bouldering mat.
At the very least the spotter ensures that the climber's head and back do not strike the ground directly.
