Haussmann had been made senator in 1857, member of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1867, and grand cross of the Legion of Honour in 1862.
Baron Georges-Eugène Haussmann was hired by Napoleon III on 22 June 1853 to "modernize" Paris.
Haussmann accomplished much of this by tearing up many of the old, twisting streets and rundown apartment houses, and replacing them with the wide, tree-lined boulevards and expansive gardens for which Paris is famous today.

The line of the inner boulevard du Prince Eugene (Voltaire) and the boulevard Richard Lenoir, and to the west by the boulevard Haussmann, the boulevard Malesherbes, and the avenue Friedland which linked the inner boulevards with the place de l’Etoile.

Haussmann laid out the Bois de Boulogne, and made extensive improvements in the smaller parks.
The gardens of the Luxembourg Palace were cut down to allow of the formation of new streets, and the Boulevard de Sebastopol, the southern half of which is now the Boulevard St Michel, was driven through a populous district.

January 1997:- From the métro station in front of the Opéra, it is only about two blocks to the 'grand boulevard' Haussmann and its 'grands magazins' where the annual winter sales will take place.
In front of the Opéra there are people around, but I am not going to stand around and watch to see if they are standing around taking in the sights.
These crews have goose-necked trucks and low-riders blocking a lane of Haussmann and traffic is bumper to bumper.
