On the edge of the Simpson Desert in Queensland's Outback lies a tiny town with a ghostly reputation.
If you are driving through the bush at night around Boulia, 300km south of Mount Isa, and you see a strange light with no apparent source dancing in the gidgee scrub or floating near an isolated highway - you're not the first.
Boulia local Robert "Bruiser" Cooms has lived in the area all his life and sighted the Min Min at least half a dozen times while driving at night.

Boulia is the administrative centre of the Boulia Shire, population approximately 600, which covers an area of 61,176 square kilometres.
The town is the home of the famous Boulia Desert Sands Camel Races, one of the most important events on the Australian camel racing circuit.
However, when the monsoon is strong rainfall can be heavy: in January 1974 Boulia received 465 mm (over 18 inches) of rain and in March 1950 over 330 mm (13 inches).

Having been in business in Boulia, Western Queensland, for over ten years, and having dealt much in money tokens, I was particularly interested in the story of ‘The Wanderer’ in ‘The Sunday Sun’ of January 15.
There was a ‘school’ on in Boulia, and a man who had just received a telegram entered the room while the game was proceeding, and crumpling the envelope up in his hand he through it on the table for a 5s I.O.U., and started to bet.
Queensland is such a big territory as you know, and we may not happen to handle some of the paper currency issued in other districts.

The Great Dunny Derby, as it's called, is raced every two years in Winton in the Central West as part of the town's Outback Festival.

Locals say that the Min Min light was last seen in 1974, but after that… well, nobody had.
Tourists who didn’t see the lights, complained it had been a wasted trip, but the locals, protective of Boulia's own mystery, insisted it was because of the great increase in traffic that the lights were running shy.
We camped on the plains at Boulia three times and I watched all night in the hope of seeing this phosphorescent phenomenon, but with no luck.
