Boulton Paul Overstrand - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Boulton Paul P.75 Overstrand was the last of the twin-engine biplane medium bombers of the Royal Air Force, a series that had begun during the First World War with the likes of the Vickers Vimy and Handley Page Type O.
The Overstrand only saw brief service in the late 1930s and by the outbreak of the Second World War only a few surviving aircraft remained in operation with training units.
As such the Overstrand was the first RAF aircraft to have a power-operated turret.

Interrupter gear - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
One of the first instances was the single nose mounted turret of the Boulton Paul Overstrand that served with the RAF, and the almost simultaneous introduction of the much more advanced Martin B-10 with the US Army Air Corps.
The guns were fired by solenoids and by introducing a break in the electrical power to the guns that coincided with the forbidden arcs of fire the aircraft would be safe from its own guns.
The Boulton Paul design used a brass drum and brush contacts that corresponded to the direction of the turret and angle of the guns.

By 1937 the Overstrand was obsolescent but one Overstrand was used in early air-to-air refuelling trials, a prophecy of things to come.
The Overstrand is forever commemorated in 101 Squadron's official badge, approved by King George VI in 1938, featuring a fierce lion rampant issuant from a castle turret.

The squadron adopted the battlements of a round tower as symbolic of its claim to be the first squadron equipped with an aircraft fitted with a power-operated rotating turret (the Boulton Paul Overstrand).
Re-formed at Bircham Newton in March 1928, No 101 became the only operational squadron to have Sidestrands, and later (from 1935) Overstrands, the first RAF bombers with enclosed and power-operated nose gun turrets.
When war broke out in 1939 the squadron was at West Raynham flying Blenheims and it was with these that it made its first bombing attack on Germany, in July 1940.

This famous plane was based on the concept that a bomber could penetrate to any target in daylight as long as it had sufficient defensive armament to battle past fighter opposition.
Gun turrets for defensive machine guns had already been pioneered by Machines Motrices in France, and a license-built version of their turret had appeared on the British Boulton Paul Overstrand bomber in 1934.
This was dramatically revealed on Dec. 18, 1939, when a formation of Vickers Wellingtons--the most battle-worthy bombers of the day with four-gun Boulton Paul tail turrets--was decimated over the Heligoland Bight by cannon-armed German fighters.
