7/8/04: CD Review Bounce A New Musical By Stephen Sondheim
The song is one of the strongest in the score, though it's overused over the course of the show -- the fact that "Bounce" was the show's third title suggests that Sondheim only eventually settled on it as a uniting theme.
Bounce is an unusually lighthearted score for Sondheim, trying much more to be an old-fashioned crowd pleaser than is normal for him, but though the score displays his usual craft it's ultimately a minor work though a highly enjoyable one, especially upon repeated listenings.
In many ways, Bounce is a big improvement on Passion, but in his apparent attempt to make a lighter and more crowd pleasing show, Sondheim and Weidman have crafted something largely forgettable, a true rarity for the composer.

The songs, too, have the vamp-and-patter spirit of early musical comedy and vaudeville, and their titles are positively telegraphic:  “Bounce,” “Gold!,” “What’s Your Rush?,” “Next to You,” “The Game,” “Talent,” and “You,” to name a few.
Bounce could, however, never be mistaken for a show from the Hope and Crosby years.
Whether or not Bounce can be termed a “flop,” the consolation for its demise is at least built into the show:  you forget the past and go on to the next thing.

While both have made bounce songs, their primary style of gangsta rap is nothing like bounce.
While samples may be familiar to some, the percussion outshines all musical aspects of a bounce song.
Many argue that bounce is the "essence or hip-hop," or "hip-hop in its truest form." It seems bizarre that the average bounce fan could consider himself in a position to speak on the essence of hip-hop, but we should examine their argument nonetheless.

"Bounce," which opened Thursday at the Kennedy Center for a limited run, is set in an exuberant era that began with the Yukon gold rush in the 1890s - in which the brothers began their careers - and ends in the Florida land boom of the Roaring Twenties.
Bounce, the Stephen Sondheim musical that played Chicago and Washington, DC, in 2003, but failed to reach New York, will be given a week-long reading at The Public Theater beginning Jan. 30, a spokesperson for the company told Playbill.com.
"Bounce" is based on the lives of the Mizner Brothers, a pair of rakish entrepreneurs from the early 20th century.

Delusions of Adequacy Reviews - Primitive Painter
The drums on the track are remarkably basic (think the general tone and style of Garbage's "Stupid Girl"), and while the bass track is even less complex, it's got a sort of frenzied bounce to it that pushes the song powerfully.
The bass almost sounds as if it was mis-mixed or something, because through the entire track, it bounces and throbs happily along, always sounding like it's on the edge of actually distorting or fuzzing up, but never actually letting that happen.
When the 'chorus' comes up, the track soars courtesy of a painfully lucid guitar part that helps the song truly 'take off' into a new musical plane.

 Roll Bounce (2005): Reviews
A sweet, sunny, cinematic song of praise to simple '70s pleasures, Roll Bounce isn't any kind of life-changing picture, but it's breezy, good-hearted fun.
Roll Bounce, a nostalgic memory of disco roller-dancing in the late 1970s, has warm starring performances from Bow Wow and Chi McBride, who are funny, lovable and sometimes touching.
Bow Wow plays the skate-dance hero in a way that's never too cool to hide what an avid achiever the kid is, and he and his buddies converse in a fiendishly alert middle-class trash talk that keeps Roll Bounce jumping.

The band is praised for its catchy-yet-heavy music and lyrics that can be provocative, terrifying, funny or ambiguous, often all in the same song.
This time they'd be exploring a music best catalogued as "other," in what seemed a tribute to the timeless sound of great pop music, combining rhythms and sounds of cultures in the southern and eastern hemispheres, as well as a dash of rap.
Musically, it shies away from the redundancy of present-day rock posturing yet remains totally immediate, relevant and ridiculously catchy.

Gibbard later sang another new song, which he said "didn't make the new record." Indeed, this one sounded like it would be more at home on "Transatlanticism," the last Barsuk release.
Move over, Clapton's "Tears in Heaven." What makes Gibbard's song all the more powerful and challenging is that it doesn't ride the smooth, "we'll be together in Paradise" cliché, it takes an off-road route, frightening but courageous.
