The dissolution of a magic boundary separating Richards country from the magic infested Midlands starts the whole thing off for our hero but of course there is a little more history to the problem than meets the eye.
This must be the fifth or sixth time that I have read my way through the Sword Of Truth series, and Wizards First Rule, musts tand as one of the best.

If you have read the Sword of Truth series i would highly suggest reading this story it is a great add on to the series.
In the Sword of Truth series, the boundary went up many years ago and only the elderly remember it.
The boundary goes up, Richard couldn't possibly have been concieved yet, Zedd intends to throw up the second boundary in a year, and it just doesnt make any sense that way.

Yessiree, there's no denying that you can't miss Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth novels on your local bookstore shelves, if only for the fact that they're so goddamn huge that one copy of a Goodkind novel takes up the same shelf space as three or four novels by most anyone else.
We learn that Richard's father was the one in possession of the Book of Counted Shadows, and that as a child Richard was made to commit the book to memory before his father burned it so its secrets wouldn't fall into the wrong hands.
Zedd now presents Richard with the Sword of Truth and informs him he is the Seeker, a figure who, in times of insurmountable strife, emerges as a man of heroic stature who must use the magic of the sword and his own experience and independent judgment to find a solution and save the day.

If, however, you are looking for something that will be as good as the novels in the "Sword of Truth" series, I think that you will be, unfortunately, a little disappointed.
Reader Summary - I've read some of the reviews here, and many of them mention how short the book is. Yes, the book is short, but the impact of the book is greater due to its briefness.
It would be nice to have a full-length novel of the time before the boundaries, but Goodkind has decided to give us as readers a teaser, a little tidbit of history to whet our appetites.
