The Blackfeet Indian Reservation forms an eastern boundary to the existing park while the Flathead Indian Reservation is located west and south of the park boundary.
Waterton Lakes National Park, Akamina-Kishinena Provincial Park, and the Flathead Provincial Forest in Canada are all found along the northern boundary of the park.
The timberline on the eastern side of the park is almost 800 feet (250 m) lower than on the western side, due to exposure to the colder winds and weather of the Great Plains.

The new community park includes wonderfully varied terrain, from gently rolling farm land on the east to steeply sloping and forested land to the west.

The park was established in 1993, and with a total area of 59 233 ha, it is the largest of the Polish national parks.

In proposing a provisional boundary for the New Forest National Park, we have anticipated a proposed Countryside Agency approach to defining National Park boundaries generally (see paper AP 00/03).
It has been included within the proposed National Park boundary because of its high landscape quality, its strong historic and cultural links with the Forest, its recreation potential and its importance for nature conservation, as recognised by its European designations; it is also an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA).
We believe, however, that (drawing on factor (g) in paper AP00/03), it is inappropriate to include a town of this size within the National Park, not least because of burden of responsibilities for planning and development control may distract the National Park Authority from its main priorities in the rural heart of the area.
