Wheeler Peak is the second highest peak in Nevada, and the highest entirely within the state.
The distinction of highest point in Nevada goes to the summit of Boundary Peak, so named because it is very near the Nevada-California border, at the northern terminus of the White Mountains.
However, Boundary Peak can be considered a subsidiary summit of Montgomery Peak, whose summit is in California, since the topographic prominence of Boundary Peak is only 253 ft (77 m), which falls under the often used 300 foot cutoff for an independent peak.

Boundary Peak is ranked number 11 of the 50 highpoints on most lists.
The stretch of desolate highway near Lida, Nevada proved to be a fun game of dodge the rabbits and coyotes(one rabbit was not so good at this game, sorry little fellar).
The nice thing about this peak is even though the scramble up the saddle is a real pain, coming back down you can haul butt straight down the scree almost skiing on the loose rock.

The twin summits of Boundary Peak and Montgomery Peak, which anchor the northern end of the White Mountain Range, lay directly before me. Boundary Peak lies just within the Nevada border, and Montgomery Peak, which is about 300 feet higher, lies in California, while the state line runs across the saddle between them.
At about 12,800 feet the north ridge intersected the peak’s east ridge, and I turned to the right and climbed the last 300 yards up to the summit, once again staying to the right side of the summit ridge in order to bypass some large rock outcroppings.
To the west the Sierras spanned the horizon, and to the east were numerous dry volcanic ranges that rose out of the lifeless Nevada desert as far as the eye could see.

The Ranger Station that administers the Boundary Peak area is the White Mountain Ranger Station in Bishop, CA at (760) 873-2500.
Past the "Boundary Peak Wilderness" sign, and into an area where the trail pretty much disappears, but there is plenty of room between sagebrush bushes to step.
Mono Lake is visible to the west, the Tonopah Missile Range to the northeast, farms and ranches on the valley floor on the California side.

I completed the seventeen county highpoints of Nevada on Sunday, August 13, 2006, with an all-day hike up Ruby Dome in Elko County.
This by no means means my Nevada climbing days are over.
There are hundreds of other peaks to visit, and I do plan to start tackling the various prominence leaders in the state on a casual basis.
