  Boundary Value Problem - Scholarpedia
In an explicit BVP, the boundary conditions and the right hand sides of the ordinary differential equations (ODEs) can involve the derivatives of each solution variable up to an order one less than the highest derivative of that variable appearing on the left hand side of the ODE defining the variable.
A multipoint problem may be converted to a two-point problem by defining separate sets of variables for each subinterval between the points and adding boundary conditions which ensure continuity of the variables across the whole interval.
For the simple equation (6), if the boundary conditions are separated, essentially we must have two boundary conditions at the origin and one at infinity matching the two decaying and one increasing (towards infinity) basis functions in the solution.

In the field of ordinary differential equations the investigations are concentrated around main problems in the theory of nonlinear boundary value problems, such as the existence of solutions, uniqueness and multiplicity of solutions, properties of solutions.
A specific feature of the investigations is that a number of the results are sharp, for instance, the definition of upper and lower functions for the second order equations, estimates of nonlinearities in superlinear boundary problems, estimates of the number of solutions in the second order problems having solutions of oscillatory type (Yu.Klokov, A.Lepin, F.Sadyrbaev).

It keeps the tradition of the International Conferences “Boundary Value Problems, Special Functions and Fractional Calculus”, devoted to 90th birthday of academician F.D.Gakhov (Minsk, Belarus, February 15-20, 1996), “Analytic Methods of Analysis and Differential Equations” (AMADE-99) (Minsk, Belarus, September 14-18, 1999), and (AMADE-2001) (Minsk, Belarus, February 15-19, 2001).
There were 23 plenary invited lectures and 116 sectional talks devoted to different problems of modern analysis, differential equations and their applications.

Heat Transfer Boundary Value Problem (BVP) Example
Based upon the known physical conditions for a fin, it is usually necessary to specify the value of the boundary conditions at two points, unless both the temperature and the temperature gradient at x=0 are known.
It is then necessary to find a value of dy/dx at x=0 which allows the resulting temperature profile to satisfy the end condition at x=1.
This program solves the two point boundary value problem of the 2nd order differential equation that describes the one dimensional, steady state temperature distribution in a tapered Fin, where y is a non-dimensional temperature and x is a non-dimensional distance.

 Exterior Boundary Value Problem: Scattering
Mathematically the second condition is a type of boundary condition at infinity.
It is evident that this boundary condition states that the solution consists of ``plane wave + outgoing wave''.
If the circular boundary were absent, then there would have been no scattering.
