The series was one of several detective shows which aired on ABC during this era, but Bourbon Street Beat was not as successful as the others (except as a title which sticks in everyone's mind).
When the series ended, the character of Rex Randolph moved to 77 Sunset Strip, and the character of Kenny Madison moved to the spinoff Surfside 6, which aired in the Bourbon Street Beat time slot the following season.
Only Andrew Duggan's character, Cal Calhoun, immediately disappeared from the screen upon the show's cancellation, although viewers probably barely noticed, since the then-ubiquitous Duggan was constantly appearing on so many different TV series in other roles.

He had recurring roles in Cimarron Strip and The Great Adventure but seldom played the same role twice except in a couple of short-lived series in which he played the lead, Bourbon Street Beat and Lancer.
Duggan seemed ubiquitous on television screens in the 1950s and 1960s, appearing in practically every narrative television series in production more than once; between new appearances and reruns, it was not unusual to see him on television several times in a single week on different shows.
Duggan also played the lead in the television series Bourbon Street Beat (1959), in which he portrayed Cal Calhoun, the head of a New Orleans detective agency.

This follow-up to 1959's Impact repeats the formula with perhaps a somewhat more cohesive selection of material, drawn primarily from detective and police shows of the period.
This time out, Buddy Morrow and the orchestra jazz up (or try to) such thematic material as Men Into Space, Hawaiian Eye, Bourbon Street Beat, and The Untouchables.
Bourbon Street Beat, in particular, benefits from the treatment that it receives here, very close to the original TV recording but with enough of an emphasis on New Orleans jazz and R&B to make it seem heavier and more serious.
