Jamaica Gleaner - Windies heartbreak in Bourda thriller - Monday | April 19, 2004
IN A pulsating duel of hugely fluctuating fortunes that belied its shortened duration, England scrambled a two-wicket victory with three balls to spare in the first One-Day International at Bourda Oval yesterday.
A sliced drive by Darren Gough off Chris Gayle just sailed out of the reach of Sylvester Joseph and the ninth-wicket pair scampered the two runs needed in near darkness to take the visitors past the home team's total of 156 for five in a match reduced to 30 overs-a-side.
Fans were already celebrating in the stands with the score at 120 for seven in the 26th over, but they did not count on Read's resilience and Collymore buckling under the pressure to produce a dramatic finale that sets the stage for the rest of the series.

Cricinfo - First Test at Bourda balanced on a knife edge
The West Indies made light work of erasing the deficit on an increasingly uneven pitch with Chris Gayle blasting his way to a furious 26 not out and Wavell Hinds reaching the close on 13 as the home side closed on 50 without loss, a slender lead of 22 runs.
Daryll Cullinan snicked a classic leg spinner from Dinanath Ramnarine to Ridley Jacobs shortly before the break and Neil McKenzie's troublesome start to the tour continued immediately after lunch when a lap-sweep at Ramnarine failed to make contact and he was bowled around his legs to leave the tourists wobbling at 198-4 having been 171-1.
Finally, however, after seven hours and 26 minutes in the steaming cauldron of the Bourda, weariness led the opener to wave at a wide ball from Courtney Walsh that bounced unexpectedly and flew from the top edge to Jacobs.

The Bourda was never among the paciest of Carribbean pitches, but in recent times, it has taken on a character that rivals the spin-friendly pitches of the Indian sub-continent.
India's tour management will, of course, take heart from this indication that the Bourda track, on which they take on the West Indies on Thursday needing to win to square the series, is so amenable to spin.

So far, the only Englishman who has unequivocally declared his intention to be at the Bourda Cricket Ground is the Rolling Stones lead singer, Mick Jagger, and he's spent the last 30 years in rock-and-roll; and even 30 years of wild excess is likely to be inadequate preparation for Guyana; Altamont notwithstanding.
Test cricket is simply too provocative for El Nino and Bourda together: it must rain, all day, for as long as it takes to abandon the match - although you could have a quick regatta in its place.
It is also possible that Kensington Oval may have to host what is now scheduled to be the Antigua Test because there is so much work to be finished on the strip at the Antigua Recreation Ground and, after Sabina, no groundsman in the Caribbean could be working remotely near his peak.
