Bourgeois pseudoscience - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bourgeois pseudoscience (Буржуазная лженаука) was a term of condemnation in the Soviet Union for certain scientific disciplines that were deemed unacceptable from an ideological point of view.
At various times pronounced "bourgeois pseudosciences" were: genetics (see Lysenkoism), cybernetics, sociology, semiotics, and comparative linguistics (see Japhetic theory).
Other disciplines were declared "bourgeois pseudosciences" in the People's Republic of China.

Suppressed research in the Soviet Union - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At different moments in Soviet history a number of research areas were declared "bourgeois pseudosciences", on ideological grounds, the most notable and harmful cases being these of genetics and cybernetics.
Cybernetics was also outlawed as bourgeois pseudoscience, "mechanistically equating processes in live nature, society and in technical systems, and thus standing against materialistic dialectics and modern scientific physiology developed by Ivan Pavlov".
In June 1951 The All-Union Conference on the State of the Theory of Chemical Composition in Organic Chemistry was held, where the resonance theory was declared bourgeois pseudoscience, and the corresponding report was sent to Stalin.

(Abstract) On the Significance of Militant Materialism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
It is an example of the way in which modern pseudoscience serves in effect as a vehicle for the grossest and most infamous reactionary views.
The Bolshevik revolution, in spite of the vast number of bourgeois revolutions which preceded it and which called themselves democratic, was the first and only revolution to wage a resolute struggle in this respect both against reaction and feudalism and against the usual hypocrisy of the ruling and propertied classes.
Anybody who has some slight acquaintance with social conditions in bourgeois countries knows that the real number of actual divorces (of course, not sanctioned by church and law) is everywhere immeasurably greater.

An example of the third feature might be the disregarding of such concepts as the free market or self determination as instances of false consciousness engedered by bourgeois ideology.
"[B]ourgeois 'freedom of conscience' is nothing but the toleration of all possible kinds of religious freedom of conscience, and that for its part [socialism] endeavors rather to liberate the conscience from the witchery of religion."
Karl Popper, a former Marxist, have argued that historical materialism is a pseudoscience because it is not falsifiable.

 Victorian's Secret
Gay is an awesomely well-informed historian, but he does little to turn any of his fine skepticism about the past onto his own position, or even to ponder what price he is paying for his deep self-assurance and his reliance on common sense.
He feels perfectly secure in distinguishing pseudoscience from the real thing and in typing some Victorian views as "representative" (conservative ideas about women's intelligence, for example) and others as "exceptional" (John Stuart Mill's ideas on the same subject, or Florence Nightingale's, or those of anyone else who diverges from the conservative, "representative" view).
Gay waves away Michel Foucault and his followers in a bibliographical note, but compared to Foucault's work this volume is very pale indeed, facile and shallow, making one wish that the two historians were not so rudely divided: one has all the note cards and the other all the ideas.

Ralph Dumain: "The Autodidact Project": "Neopositivism: Linguistic Philosophy & Critical Rationalism" by Andras Gedo
At the same time as bourgeois philosophy of the twenties staggered under the shock of the October Revolution, logical positivism and phenomenology (or what grew out of it, "fundamental ontology") very self-confidently asserted their influence and tackled (or, as they thought, liquidated) continually new problem areas.
The general crisis of bourgeois philosophy, however, made itself felt in the quickly disappearing self-confidence of the succession of philosophical fashions, in the tottering of schools that yesterday seemed to have conquered the world.
Even where the forms change, the mutual conditioning and the supplementing of the prevailing trends remain; thus the situation continues in which positivism is merely to be "corrected" or connected to life philosophy (and vice versa), a situation in which, in the final analysis, one has only the choice of either.

And I guess that's why he's included in your course, which is about pseudoscience, because his ideas were not very well grounded in science as it was done even in the Soviet Union by its best practitioners.
It would draw in the peasantry to practical activity, it would lessen their animosity toward the regime, it would lessen their tendency to hold the regime hostage by not sowing grain, not harvesting grain, not selling grain.

Stalking the Wild Taboo - Science and ideology
By science in common parlance is meant natural science, which gathers knowledge of the world as an organized, systematic enterprise and attempts to condense it into testable laws and principles by a wide- ranging and shifting set of methods.
The diagnostic features of science that distinguish it from pseudoscience are, first, repeatability: the same phenomenon is sought again, preferably by independent investigation, and the interpretation given it confirmed or discarded by means of novel analysis and experimentation.
That much being understood, Lewontin concluded, and the shackles of bourgeois ideology cast aside, we are then freed to proceed along more progressive--that is to say, Marxist--political guidelines.

Thus, pseudoscience is preferred because there are few university and no corporate jobs for those who call into doubt the rationality of the capitalist system.

This Commission was created in the RAN Presidium when science was deprived not only of money but also honor after being trampled on in the mass media, who explained that a pack of old men took all the money and are taking from real esoteric knowledge what should rightfully be going to it.
In the Academy of Sciences' resolution it said that this was pseudoscience, that nothing of the sort existed, and that all the records and reports about this supposedly having been adopted and put to use long ago were falsifications.
If you don't believe in the RAN's expert review, then invite someone from abroad, although of all Russian science the RAN is the most integrated into world science in view of the fact that we have had mistakes in the expert review of science, although perhaps least of all.

Japhetic theory (linguistics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Marr adopted the term "Japhetic", from Japheth, the name of one of the sons of Noah, in order to characterise his theory that the Kartvelian languages of the Caucasus area were related to the Semitic languages of the Middle East (named after Shem, Japheth's brother).
This aspect of Marr's thinking was an attempt to extend the Marxist theory of international class consciousness far beyond its original meaning, by trying to apply it to language.
In 1950, after Marr's death, his claims were officially discredited as a misrepresentation of Marxist theory in an article nominally written by Stalin.

Presently we live in a time of crisis, in which structures that were long considered as solid begin to crumble, and many things that had been considered to be truths suddenly appear doubtful.
This is an especially fertile ground for pseudosciences, since people get confused about it what is real and what is not.
Marx was very conscientious in this regard; he had excellent knowledge of the mainstream economics of his time, and spent a lot of time to determine in detail what he considered right and wrong in their writings.

 Lysenkoism
Genetics was stigmatized as a "bourgeois science" or "fascist science" (due to the fact that fascists — particularly the Nazis in Germany — embraced genetics and attempted to use it to justify their theories on eugenics and the master race).
Lysenkoism is invoked by biological determinists for the same reason that eugenics and scientific racism are invoked by social constructivists—both were historical events viewed as the extremes to which politics could be used to trump science with disasterous effects, and both imply that the practitioners so-labeled are interested in producing propaganda rather than science.
Intelligent Design Theory, Creationism, and some Global Warming theories have, on occasion, been labeled as forms of neo-Lysenkoism, because they aim to supplant established scientific theories, like evolutionary theory, with ones that are untestable and serve political and religious interests, and therefore constitute a Lysenkoism-like form of pseudoscience.
