Bournemouth is a seaside resort in the county of Dorset on the south coast of England.
Bournemouth is part of a conurbation with, to the west, Poole (population 138,385 in 2001) and to the east Christchurch (population 44,865), the whole area being sufficiently populous to be one of the major retail and commercial centres in the south of England.
Although Bournemouth was located in the county of Hampshire until 1974, the administrative boundary between the newly-created entities of the administrative counties of Dorset and Hampshire was made such that Bournemouth was within the administrative county of Dorset prior to its becoming a UA.

Before Tregonwell decided to build his holiday home here in the early 19th century, Bournemouth was a vast heathland extending about six miles inland from Hengistbury Head to Poole.
The Bournemouth of today is part of a sprawing conurbation, but the original dwellings were sited at a place called Bourne Bottom, where the Bourne stream enters the sea.
The first written reference to the area came from the Christchurch monks in 1407 who named it "la Bournemowthe" and it was not until the mid-19th century that the name Bournemouth was adopted.

Opened by Lady Meyrick on 16th April 1908, East Cliff railway is the oldest of the town's three cliff railways.
The winding gear was situated at the upper station, and controlled by a 'driver' with the assistance of an attendant at the lower station, and the passenger cars were controlled by a 25hp winding motor, using mains electricity converted to 500v DC.
Designed to be interchangeable across all three of Bournemouth's surviving cliff railways, the cars can accommodate twelve passengers, on longitudinal bench seats, and have a door at each end of the carriage for boarding and alighting.
