Bournonite: Yaogangxian Mine, Chenzhou, Hunan Province, China.(Connoisseur's Choice) - HighBeam Encyclopedia
Bournonite is a steel-gray to iron-fl metallic mineral with a luster that varies from brilliant to dull.
Bournonite is almost unknown from the eastern United States, and most occurrences are as a generally massive, fine-grained accessory ore mineral.
Arsenian bournonite occurred as small striated prisms with pyrite and zunyite at the Zuni mine, Silverton district, and as a relatively widespread ore mineral in the mines of Bear and Anvil Mountains, San Juan County.

Bournonite, also known as cog-wheel ore, was named by Jameson in 1805 for J. de Bournon.
Petterd's first reference of bournonite is in 1893 quoting Gould's report to the Royal Society of Tasmania (1871) where bournonite occurs in patches near the junction of the slates and granite on the south-east shores of King Island.
Bournonite has been recorded from several localities in the Zeehan region, most notably from a tribute of the Argent Company, an occurrence recorded last century, from Brown and Turner's Prospect near the No. 6 Montana lode as lumps up to 5cm in length, and from the Swansea and Western mines.

 BOURNONITE (Copper Lead Antimony Sulfide)
Bournonite is also called "cog wheel ore" because of the cog wheel shape that the twinned crystals form.
Twinning is common in bournonite and if a crystal repeatitively twins it can form a type of twin called a trilling.
The trilling is composed of four "twins" or crystals connected in a plane and forms a wheel with a jagged edge that resemble the teeth of a cog wheel.

The technology of processing antimony-bearing ores
The possibility of separating contaminant antimony minerals depends on the mineralogy of the ores and the flotation properties of the antimony minerals.
The flotation properties of stibnite jamesonite, gudmundite, boulangerite and bournonite have been studied in laboratory experiments.
Information has been obtained which is fundamental to assessment of the possibilities for separating each of these antimony minerals in normal process environments for beneficiation of complex ores.

 Bournonite
Mineral Notes: Bournonite is a popular collector mineral because of the striking silvery-grey crystals which have a strong tendency to form radiaiting (cogwheel-like) aggregates.
For this reason Cornish miners, where particulalry striking specimens were once found, knew the mineral as cogwheel ore. Similarly, in Germany the mineral is known as Radelrz, or wheel ore.
