 Bournville: Beginnings
George was 56 years old when he developed the first house on what was to become the Bournville Building Estate and the success of its development was something to which he devoted his thoughts and actions for the rest of his life.
In 1900 he founded the Bournville Village Trust, a charitable organisation set up to ensure the careful planned development and maintenance of the Estate and, to preserve it for future generations, thus ensuring that the results of his work would continue after his lifetime.
Bournville was the direct result of one Birmingham Quaker industrialist's conscience; appalled as he was by the terrible conditions of penury and squalor by which the workers of Birmingham were surrounded.

The history of the Cadbury family and its chocolate business
Bournville Village differed from other communities such as Port Sunlight, built for Lever Bros' employees because it was a mixed community in terms of both class and occupation: a model of good planning open to all comers (rather than containing only 'tied' houses for Cadbury workers).
For Bournville, the housing type chosen by George Cadbury was a rectangular cottage, each one with a large garden.
Bournville became included within the boundary of the city of Birmingham in 1911 as other housing sites were developed around it.

What the researchers found was that Bournville's success comes down to a seamless mix including quality homes, neighbours from different backgrounds, services and open space.

Indeed, the developers of Bournville Park are merely imitating the ethos of one of Britain's earliest, and arguably most successful, planned communities: Bournville Village, a stone's throw away.
Begun at the end of the 19th century by the philanthropic Cadbury brothers, Bournville was conceived as an antidote to the unhealthy squalor of inner-city Birmingham.
The Cadburys never meant Bournville to be for the poorest of the poor - everyone who went to live there had to pay their way, either by renting or buying their houses outright.
