Topic: Bowden cable

Bowden cable - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Invented by Frank Bowden, a bowden cable is a type of flexible cable used to transmit mechanical force or energy by the movement of an inner cable (most commonly of steel or stainless steel) relative to a hollow outer cable housing.
The cable housing is generally of composite construction, consisting of a spiral steel wire, often coated with plastic, and with a plastic outer sheath.
Usually provision is made for adjusting the cable tension using an inline hollow screw (often called a "barrel adjuster"), which lengthens or shortens the cable housing relative to a fixed anchor point.

The activating cable grip end of cable and sheath 58 is attached to the hand lever 52 near its connection with body 48 at hand lever connection 54 and enters the sheath at hand held brake body cable sheath connector and stop 56.
Cable sheath connector and stop 80 is attached to the upper "V" end of upper brake frame brace 76 as by welding and extends upward and forward in line with the bent portion thereof.
Cable sheath connector and stop 80 is in the general shape of a machine nut and engages ferrule 62, connector ferrule receptor 64 and receives the lower end of sheath 58, thus acting as a receiver and stop for the lower end of sheath 58, allowing cable 68 to move inward and outward relative thereto.

This corresponds to 8 millimeters of arcuate rotation of the pulley, 6, at the radius at which the bowden cable, 80, is seated in the preferred embodiment.

Bicycles/Maintenance and Repair/Brakes/Adjusting brakes - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks
Most bicycle brakes use a lever on the handlebars to pull a cable: that cable draws together a pair of brake arms, pressing the brake blocks (aka pads or shoes) against the rim of the wheel.
The section leading from the handlebar to the frame is always surrounded by an outer, which together with the inner wire cable forms a bowden cable and allows force to be transmitted from the levers to the mechanism on the frame through a flexible connection.
Pull the cable through the outer until it is all out at the lever, then remove the nipple from the lever and discard the cable.

The clutch and pressure plate are held in contact by spring pressure exerted by the coil springs of the diaphragm spring in the pressure plate.
When you depress the clutch you are pulling the cable forward, which turns the operating bar to which the release (throwout) bearing is attached forward, and pushes the bearing backward and into contact with the clutch plate.
If the cable is off the hook, or if the hook has worn through and broken (yes, that can happen after 30+ years, but it can be re-welded), then the pedal will be flopping about, not pulling on the cable at all.

 Sheldon Brown's Bicycle Glossary Bo--Bz
The type of concentric cables used for brakes and gears was once known by the term "Bowden cables", after their inventor.
On traditional steel frames these attachments are held on by brazing, but the term "braze-on" is also used for fittings that are welded, glued, rivetted or moulded on to frames of other materials.
Since the cable was being pushed at one end and pulled at the other, a positive return function could be attained with a much lower overall spring tension.
