Kite flying - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kite flying is the activity of flying tethered man-made objects in wind.
Kites typically consist of one or more spars (sticks) to which the paper or fabric sail is attached, although some, such as foil kites, have no spars at all.
In Pakistan, kite flying is a ritual for the spring festival known as Basant.

Kites come in all shapes and sizes and can be constructed from many different materials.
A structure designed to gain lift from the wind, a tether to keep the kite from blowing away, and a bridle of two or more lines to control the face of the kite so as to maintain the proper angle to the wind.
Bend a two to three inch bow into the horizontal spar, pull the string taut while holding the bow in the spar, and tie off the string so that the bow remains after the string is tied.

 All About Kites
A kite is an object that flies by opposing the force of the wind with the tension of a string held by the operator.
Kites are designed with different shapes, forms and sizes, from historic flat geometric designs, through box kits and other aerodynamic forms, to modern sparless inflatable designs.
Kite festivals are held where kites from around the world are displayed in the sky.

Suggestions about how kites might be used within schools
The hanging of their kites in Queen Victoria Hall was seen as the culmination of the project, and a great deal of time was spent by the students determining how the kites were to be suspended, as well as their placement throughout the hall.
A kite that is developing lots of lift and has little drag is said to be operating efficiently, while a kite that is developing only a small amount of lift and has lots of drag is said to be inefficient.
If the kite is lying parallel to the flow of the wind, then little lift is generated, but if the kite is held across the flow of the wind at too great an angle, the airflow around the kite becomes turbulent and more drag occurs than lift, preventing the kite from flying.

The Drachen Foundation: A Non-Profit Kite Education Resource—Basics
A kite is a heavier-than-air tethered aircraft kept aloft in a perpetual stall by the wind.
Some of the best known variations to these types are the compound kite (like the box but with wings), the sled, the delta, and the parafoil (which relies solely on the pressure of the wind to give it shape).
Kites are heavier-than-air flying structures controlled by three main forces: lift, gravity, and drag.

In the less tracking (the bottom bowed less) case, if turbulence pushes your kite to one side or the other, the bottom of the kite will slide down, aiming the nose back up, pointing the kite back to the top of the window where you want the kite to be.
The bow while the kite is in flight is usually determined by the bridle set-up, especially for a 6 legged bridle.
Quad line kites are like helicopters they can stop, go, reverse, hover, etc and dual line kites with their pitch angle of attack set by the bridle are more like a conventional propellor aircraft - they must always be moving forward to maintain flight.

 Tuning A Rokkaku - KitingTips
Bowing on most RokkakuKite's is done with tensioning lines behind the main sail.
The more the kite is bowed the less it will behave erratically (often seen as fishtailing or even spinning), but you lose some of the lifting surface when you bow.
If wind is heavy, though, you may want to move the tow point up so the kite pulls less, and make up for the loss of stability by bowing the kite more.

The kites were tailless, bowed, diamond-shaped; kites which the writer called "Malay kites." The only Malay kites that the author of this book ever saw were at the World's Fair at Chicago, and in the collection of Mr.
These kites differed from the Holland kites and the Eddy kites in the fact that they possessed two cross sticks, one straight one and one a bow over the, straight stick.
The vital difference between this and the old-fashioned diamond kite consists in using instead of the cross stick, a bow, as may be seen in the accompanying diagram.

In the rear of the kite are two horizontal spreader spars (as well as a single verticle spine spar) These horizontal spars have an adjustable string attached to the ends.
Depending on the size of the rok, a good starting point is to give enough bow that you can fit your fist between the kite and the adjustable line.
