 The Bowery
On the stage of the National Theatre (104 Bowery) Frank S. Chanfrau developed a long series of plays about Mose, the Bowery's answer to Paul Bunyan, an epic slugger and street fighter.
As later as 1898 the Bowery had ninety-nine houses of entertainment, of which only fourteen were classed as respectable by the police.
The Bowery became filled with alms houses, cheap hotels, warehouses, bars, and commerical establishments of the lowest kind.

 Ichbinkunst
Typical Bowery 'looks' took make-up, wigs, hats and clothes to extraordinary extremes: a curly yellow- blonde coiffure with face painted in huge red polka dots, or a tiny policeman's helmet perched above a face made up to resemble a herpes scab infestation.
There Bowery and best friend Trojan Name tottered about in anything from baby-doll nighties to elephant ear-collared 1970's disco shirts, kilts with frilly underwear, blouses and tights and multi-coloured patent leather platform-soled shoes.
For Bowery dressing up became a way of life, which turned into paid work; he became famous for being so noticeable.

 MUSICAL THEATRE NOTES
Besides the "legitimate theatre," Tony Pastor's Music Hall, which had opened on the Bowery during the Civil War, was the nation's leading variety theatre when it moved uptown to 14th Street in 1881.
The measure of Jule Styne's contributions to the world of musical theatre may best be appreciated not alone by what performers have done for his songs, but also by what his songs have meant to the careers of the performers who have sung them.
Since variety-type musical shows were then the most popular form of video diversion, it became increasingly important for stage musicals to engage an audience in a coherent story - or at least project a unified theme - in order to lure people away from their living room box.

 A Chronological W.C. Biography
Previous accounts have it that Fields' first New York City appearance was at the Old London Theatre in the Bowery in 1898, but new research by Simon Louvish places Fields first in New York at Miner's Bowery Theatre on January 18, 1899.
Fields spoke for the first time in his stage act in 1916, after having performed "silent" comedy and juggling routines during his previous 15 years on the world circuit.
Fields' sister Adel said that Fields didn't actually leave home until 1899 (when he was19), and that Fields' relationship with his father wasn't as strained as the star claimed in his interviews.

True West Summary & Essays - Sam Shepard
Sam Shepard's very successful playwrighting career began in the mid-1960s when his often bizarre and anti-realistic plays were produced in experimental off- off-Broadway theatres such as La Mama and Theatre Genesis at St. Mark's Church m-the-Bowery.
His popularity broadened and by the time True West appeared in 1980, many critics felt that Shepard was at the forefront of new American playwrights and, along with other dramatists such as David Mamet, Marsha Norman, and Beth Henley, was defining a new decade of theatre.
In many circles True West was hailed as a breakthrough for Shepard, a work in which experimental drama was successfully melded with the more conventional elements of modern theatre.
