 Sunniside Local History Society
The Bowes family's connection with the county of Durham had begun in the middle of the fourteenth century with Adam Bowes' acquisition of the lordship of Streatlam in the south of the county and for five centuries the family played a notable role in public life.
Until 1713 the basis of the Bowes' influence was the estate and castle of Streatlam, but after that date the acquisition of the Gibside estate gave them an influence in the north of the county and a share in the immense wealth which was to be acquired from the coal trade.
Like his grandfather, George Bowes, he loved Gibside and employed John Dobson to remove the third storey of the Hall in 1805 and adorn the South Front with a high battle mounted parapet pierced with huge crosses.

Welcome to the Bowes Lyon Centre Web Site
I used to work in the cloakroom at Bowes Lyon House in 1968 -1969, I also went to Wales for a holiday in 1969 (organised by the youth club) with some people that were also working towards their Duke of Edinburgh awards, my boyfriend at the time being one of them.
Bowes Lyon House holds many fond memories for me, particularly as I had my first kiss with my first serious boyfriend on the balcony.
Bowes has achieved lots over the years, it has brought the right people together, lots of youngsters who came are now married and had children that now come to Bowes to enjoy what their parents enjoyed.

 Royal Lineage
The Bowes were a family of ancient and honourable descent, Sir Robert Bowes being Elizabeth I's ambassador to Scotland from 1577 to 1583.
This higher rank of peerage in some way redressed the wrong done to the Lyon family by James V. The 2nd Earl of Kinghorne, it is said, 'coming to his inheritance the wealthiest peer in Scotland, he left it the poorest'.
His son, Patrick Lyon, was created a peer of Parliament in 1445 as Lord Glamis after being released by the English who had held him hostage for King James I of Scots.

 Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother
Her family name is Bowes-Lyon, and the lions in the 1st and 4th quarters are for the Lyon family, obviously based on the Scottish arms, and the 2nd and 3rd quarters are ermine, with 3 bows (palewise) for Bowes.
Part of the marriage settlement was that John should adopt a new surname, Bowes Lyon, and that his children would bear the quartered arms (I believe he himself bore both arms per pale as normal for a husband and wife).
For example the Lyons are related through marriage to the Grahams (Dukes of Montrose), the Keiths (Earls Marischal), the Grays (Barons Gray) and the Scrymgeours (Earls of Dundee).

 Bowes origins
There are other Bowes families mentioned by Robert Surtees in his History and Antiquities of the County Palatine of Durham (1816-1840) in which he states: " that there were various sprinklings of the ancient name of Bowes, hesitating between gentry and yeomanry, that occur in wills and registers throughout Allertonshire and Richmondshire.
Mention is made of the name in the reign of Edward 1st and Edward 11 and grants of land were made in Yorkshire to people bearing the name of Bowes.

Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon (Elizabeth Angela Marguerite) (4 August 1900 – 30 March 2002), later Queen Elizabeth ("Elizabeth"), was the Queen Consort of George VI of the United Kingdom from 1936 to 1952 and the mother of his successor, Queen Elizabeth II, the current British monarch.
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon was the fourth daughter and the ninth of ten children of Claude George Bowes-Lyon, Lord Glamis, (later 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne), and his wife, Nina Cecilia Cavendish-Bentinck.
Elizabeth laid her bouquet at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior on her way into the Abbey, a gesture which every royal bride since has copied, though she chose to do this on the way back from the altar rather than to it.
