Many complain about Bowles' overabundance of Y chromosomes, but the hall's proximity to campus, study-friendly atmosphere and tradition-heavy activities have contributed to a 42 percent return rate -- highest among all the residence halls.
Bowles also went through a bit of a change, shifting their attention from the frats to mischievous and then-all-male Deutsch Hall.
Bowles legend has it that on the day UC officials arrived at the hall to inform the residents that after the semester their home would be razed, Landau triumphantly presented them with the certificate designating the hall as a historic place, and therefore untouchable.

 IHAS: Composer
Bowles followed Copland to Paris, Berlin, and Morocco, immersing himself in the European cultural world and acquiring his first taste for the wanderlust that would become a hallmark of his life.
Back in the States from 1933-1947, Bowles composed for the theatre, ballet, and films; married novelist Jane Auer (with whom he would remain until her death in 1973 despite the stormy, unconventional nature of their relationship); wrote short stories and journalism; and traveled extensively in Latin America.
Bowles' musical compositions from the 1930's and 40's blend the influences of the French avant garde with American folk and popular elements, and, as recent performances have revealed, compare favorably with the works of Copland, Thomson, and Blitzstein from the same period.

In addition, the Acting General Counsel alleges that by letter dated February 26, 1999, Respondent Bowles was advised of the settlement reached with Respondent Hall and was solicited to make an offer of backpay and a proposed plan of payment.
We agree with the Acting General Counsel that the document submitted by Respondent Bowles in December 1998 does not satisfy the requirements of Section 102.56 of the Board’s Rules and Regulations, and therefore does not constitute an adequate answer to the compliance specification.
Thus, Respondent Bowles, despite having been advised of the filing requirements on several occasions, has failed to file an answer to the compliance specification, and has failed to offer an explanation for its failure to do so.

The early buildings constructed under Kelham, Bowles Hall (1929), McLaughlin Hall (1931), and Giannini Hall (1930)--designed by William C. Hays, were simple and classical in appearance, and situated according to Howard's plan.
Not all were pleased with the demolition of historic buildings, the construction of enormous buildings, and the dismissal of the comprehensive campus plan.
In addition charges were leveled that the ad-hoc placement of the new buildings lacked sensitivity--Evans Hall (1971) was not only out of scale with the surrounding buildings, but was placed in the middle of the central glade, and Moffit Library (1970) blocked the main axis of the campus plan.

Eventually the football team moved out of Bowles Hall, but the Cal Band would still occasionally stop in front of the dorm after a game and play for the Bowlesmen.
One day, as legend has it, the Band refused to play "By" as they marched passed Bowles Hall, so the Bowlesmen ran in front of the Band and laid upon the ground to stop the Band from moving forward and to "encourage" them to play their drinking song.
A less mythic story from the 1970's claims that Bowles Hall convinced the University that the Band was "duty-bound" to perform for them after every game (back in the days when the Band received sizable income from the University).
