Bowline   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The bowline is used to tie sheets and halyards (control lines) to sails, to temporarily tie a rode (anchor line) to an anchor, or, using one knot on each line, tie together 2 lines of different diameters.
Two bowlines tied close together can be used to make an emergency bowswain's chair to go up the mast or bring an injured person aboard.
The benefits of the bowline are in its loop that will not slip, and in its ability to be untied after being exposed to a strain.

 Knot Knowledge - Bowline
There are several variations on tying the bowline, two of which are presented here.
I start with one method of tying that is simple to photograph and then demonstrate the one handed twist method, which is an easy and reliable way of forming the loop in the standing part.
Be sure that the end of the rope you have in your hand is pointing up and the end of the second rope (that you'll be twisting a loop into) is pointing down.

Bowline Pond has an approximate surface area of 54 acres and is separated from Haverstraw Bay by an intake channel that is less than 100 feet wide.
The controversy pertains to the perforation size of the fabric proposed for the Bowline Unit 3 Gunderboom (as compared to the Lovett fabric) and whether the proposed Bowline Unit 3 fabric complies with the draft SPDES permit condition limiting perforation size to a maximum of 0.5 mm.
The proposed Bowline Unit 3 facility will be located next to two existing power facilities, Bowline Units 1 and 2 at the Bowline Generating Station, off Samsondale Avenue in the Town of Haverstraw, Rockland County, New York, on part of a 257-acre parcel owned by the Applicant.

After stopping to investigate the traffic accident, it is believed that the two officers recognized an alias name given to a witness at the accident scene by one of the sedan's occupants.
Bowline jumped onto the sedan's running board and brought Gregg out of the vehicle at gunpoint.
It was believed at the time of the shooting that Gregg had killed both officers, but an investigation of the shooting led authorities to charge one of the other two men with the murder of Captain Darrow.

Within the context of the Bowline 3 hearing record, the evidence of the Gunderboom technology's efficacy are largely dependent on the studies and conclusions developed from the existing Lovett Station deployment of the Gunderboom located three miles north of Bowline 3 on the Hudson River.
There is nothing in the record to allay concerns of the potential operation of the Gunderboom to actually increase the impingement and entrainment of aquatic life by Bowline Units 1 and 2, due to the close proximity of the intakes to the proposed Unit 3 intake.
In addition to the studies on the effectiveness of the Gunderboom, the ALJ primarily relied on the failure to declare the Gunderboom BTA at Lovett as a factor tending to demonstrate that the Gunderboom technology was unavailable as BTA.

Come Caving with the VPI Cave Club!
The bowline is the King of knots because it is strong, secure, and versatile, as kings should be.
Four of the required knots are based on the bowline (bowline, mountaineering bowline, bowline on a coil, bowline on a bight) and knot texts will show many more variations.
Although the "left-handed" form of the bowline is thought to be just as strong as the properly tied version, the free end is more likely to snag on something and capsize the knot into a slip knot.

 The Bowline
When a bowline is unloaded, it can very readily work its way untied - I know, it has happened to me! Fortunately I only lost a scrubbing brush.
The bowline is relatively tolerant of such stresses.
Nevertheless some texts quote a rule of thumb which states that the loose end should be as long as 12 times the circumference for the sake of safety.

 The Bowline & Running Loops
The Bowline isn't generally bad, but it isn't secure enough for critical applications, especially where the line will see a lot of movement and/or where stiff or slippery rope is used.
Like any loop, the bowline can be made into what is known as a running loop shown below, which causes the loop to act as the sliding part of a noose.
Of course, the fixed bowline must be made very small to prevent the figure 8 stopper knot from sliding through.

Not a fishing knot, but certainly one every boating fisherman should know, this rope knot is used to make a fixed-size loop in a line.
The bowline is used to temporarily tie a rode to an anchor, or, using one knot on each line, tie together 2 lines of different diameters.
The advantage of the bowline are that its loop will not slip, and its ability to be untied after being exposed to a strain.

The Bowline   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The bowline is traditionally preferred to the many other possible loop knots because it is secure, itwon'tcome untied, it is easy to tie under difficult conditions, and it is easy to untie — a requirement of good knots.
The bowline must be "worked up" carefully: Pinch the working end against the parallel edge of the working loop, then pull on the standing part, making adjustments as necessary.
The bowline can also be used to make a noose or to securely bend two ropes together as illustrated in Figure 5.

GuideLines - Knots to Know -- The Bowline
Going even further back, a "curiously intricate knot…akin to the bowline" was found on a scrap of rigging during the excavation of the Egyptian Pharaoh Cheops' solar ship.
The bowline is easy to tie, for one thing, and once properly tied, it yields a high breaking-strength loop that almost never slips or jams.
This is known as "stopping" the knot, and it reduces the likelihood that the bowline will work loose and come apart.

 The Bowline Knot
This unusual Bowline does seem to hold well, however, on balance, we feel it is much safer to stick to the "known quantity" of a Bowline oriented in the usual way.
Firstly, the Bowline probably built up its reputation as a reliable knot when it was used aboard a boat.
The two applications are very different, and I suspect that the applicability of the Bowline has not been fully addressed as its use has spread from one application to another.

TreeBuzz Board: Half Hitch before Bowline
The reason we're putting the Half Hitch before the Running Bowline is that the Half Hitch dissipates the load so that it is not the Running Bowline that is taking the full dynamic load, it is the Half Hitch that takes the initial load then it passes into the Running Bowline.
The bowline by itself is secure in my opinion but to save my rope I always put the half hitch, even if the loads are static and I am close the swl of the rope I'll put the half hitch.
With a half hitch, I tie it such that it is working in the same diretion as the running bowline, so that tightening the half hitch, both before cutting, and in the moment of catching, also tightens the running bowline.
