Bowling (cricket) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An infamous "underarm bowling" incident occurred during a One-day International match between the Australia and New Zealand teams, in which the bowler took advantage of the fact that underarm bowling was still legal by rolling the ball along the ground.
Bowling the ball is distinguished from simply throwing the ball by a strictly specified biomechanical definition.
In baseball, pitching is considered the defensive role, whereas in cricket bowling is primarily an offensive role and is referred to as the attack.

Definition of Cricket - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
A standard cricket ground, showing the cricket pitch (brown), close-infield (light green) within 15 yards (13.7 m) of the striking batsman, infield (medium green) inside the white 30 yard (27.4 m) circle, and outfield (dark green), with sight screens beyond the boundary at either end.
Additionally, as in professional cricket it is common for balls to be bowled at over 90 mph (144 km/h), the game needs to be played in daylight that is good enough for a batsman to be able to see the ball.
Cricket entered an epochal era in 1961, when English counties modified the rules to provide a variant match form that produced an expedited result: games with a restricted number of overs per side.

 Cricket - free-definition
Cricket is a major sport in places such as England and Wales, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the English-speaking Caribbean.
The bowling team tries to limit the runs scored by the batting team and at the same time to get the opposition players out, an event which is described as 'taking a wicket'.
Additionally, as in professional cricket it is not unusual for balls to be bowled at over 80mph, the game needs to be played in daylight that is good enough for a batsman to be able to see the ball.

Cricket is also a major sport in England and Wales, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the English-speaking countries of the Caribbean, which are known in cricketing parlance as the West Indies.
The laws of cricket stipulate certain exceptions in favour of the batsman; for instance, a batsman should not be given out LBW if the place where the ball bounced on the pitch is to the leg-side of the area strictly between the two wickets.
Cricket was prominent in London as early as 1707 and large crowds flocked to matches on the Artillery Ground in Finsbury.

A much more successful strategy is to work even harder at not losing another wicket, and continuing to strive for the 1 or 2 runs per ball.

DM's Explanation of Cricket - Bowling Strategy and Tactics
The bowling of the six balls in an over involves a tactical decision by the bowler on what each of the six balls is designed to achieve.
Other possibilities include changing to inswing, using cut, bowling a slower ball to induce a mistimed shot, or pitching short and aiming at the batsman to force a back foot defensive that may result in a misplaced hit into the air.
They will bowl this ball repeatedly, with slight variations in flight, line, and length, to get the batsman into a rhythm, and then break it up with a variation such as an arm ball for an off spinner, or a googly or flipper for a leg spinner.

I think cricket's just fine the way it is. If we let the Americans in, it is only a matter of time before Uncle Sam, Inc. buys its way to cricketing success.
One aspect of cricket which I don't think has a parallel in baseball is that a cricket batsman can be technically flawed and physically unremarkable but if he is mentally strong, and has what is called a "good temperament", he can nonetheless be quite successful (and the converse is true).
Cricket is one of the few sports where batsman with noticeably declining skills can hang around just because of the experience they've accumulated.

The West Indies Cricket Board has agreed to implement an injury prevention system for fast bowlers under the age of 19 and specifically in Under-15 and Under-19 WICB competitions.
