This is a standard county soil survey, including descriptions of soils, notes on land use, and a good color map of soils in the county.
Although not a comprehensive narrative, this county history is a splendid source book organized according to areas of the county--Haley Area, Gascoyne Area, Scranton Area, Bowman Area, and Rhame Area.

 Breeding Birds of North Dakota
Further west at Westhope in Bottineau County it was reported to be frequent as late as 1910 (R. Currie), and in McLean County, several were seen near the towns of Coleharbor and Max during May 1918 (W. Taylor).
In Ward County in the vicinity of Donnybrook, the species was reported to be numerous as late as 1923 (Peters 1923), and near Minot, a few pairs were still nesting during the period, 1933-1945 (Stine 1945).
In Bowman County, broods of stub-tailed young out of the nest were recorded as early as June 5 in 1973 (M. Avery, RES), and June 11 in 1965 (RES).

The Bowman County Commission received a grant of $500,000 for repairs to the paved road south of Rhame, ND.
New drilling continues in the county, and the companies developing the field intend to proceed with secondary recovery efforts in the near future, which will result in a large number of additional wells for secondary recovery purposes.
Although the county has received a significant increase in its direct share from the Oil and Gas Gross Production Tax (around $900,000 in FY97, all of which was used for road spending), its road expenditures for that year exceeded $1,800,000.

Broods were recorded in Bowman County as follows: eight small young on June 6, 1964 (RES), ten large young on June 27, 1971 (P. Springer), and a brood on July 28, 1966 (RES).
In Billings County, a brood of four young was reported in the south unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park during late July 1955 (E. Brooks).
On the basis of wing feather characteristics, the hatching dates of 299 immature birds shot during the hunting seasons of 1966-1973 were determined as ranging from the week of May 15-21 through the week of July 10- 16, and the peak occurred during June 5- 11 (Kobriger 1974).
