  Bowsprit, sprit topmast, jib boom
From the early 16th century until about 1650 (occasionally as late as 1670), the bowsprit was routed past the foremast on the starboard side.It did not lie parallel to the keel, but at an angle, so that the head of the bowsprit was on the centreline of the ship.
After this time the bowsprit's heel was stepped in line with the foremast, and supported by the stem -thus it was situated with all its length exactly on the centreline, like all the other masts and topmasts.
Two timbers, the bees, to right and left of the head of the bowsprit, served to attach the fore topmast stay, and the fore topmast preventer stay (see STAYS).The dolphin striker was fitted under the bowsprit cap, and the martingale stays (see BOWSPRIT RIGGING) passed under this.

  Bowsprit - Definition, explanation
The bowsprit of a sailing vessel is a pole extending forward from the vessel's prow.
In the 17th century and early 18th century a vertical sprit topmast was added near the end of the bowsprit and another square sail added to it; this is not a particular successful design however, the mast tending to carry away in heavy weather.
Bowsprits are rare on modern yachts; the forestay merely runs down to the tip of the bow.

The Bowsprit Tortoise population on Dassen Island in 1989 was estimated at 5,937.

 Bowsprit gammoning
Until into the late 17th century the gammoning was the only standing rigging on the bowsprit, and in all cases it is the first rope to be attached when qtting the rigging.
The bowsprit gammoning was looped over the bowsprit, passed down the knee of the head, through the gammoning hole, up again to the bowsprit and over it, back to the gammoning hole again etc., the whole repeated eight to eleven times.
They were slightly thicker than the rope, and as long as the gammoning itself on the bowsprit until the 18th century, slightly shorter in the 18th and 19th centuries.

 Gear for Gaffers
Bowsprits, like masts, are structural members in compression, the sail loads on the cranse iron being transmitted to the bowsprit heel, where they are then taken into the hull.
As in the case of a mast, this state of affairs is achieved by the use of stays: the bobstay running from cranse iron to a point on the stem somewhere around the water-line, and bowsprit shrouds from cranse iron to plates mounted at around deck level.
Where the staying angles are small, usually when the bowsprit is long relative to the beam or the forward freeboard, then the equivalent of spreaders are fitted, referred to as the dolphin striker for the bobstay, and whiskers for the bowsprit shrouds.

Liardet (1849): Shifting, or taking out, a bowsprit.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-24)
In preparing to take a bowsprit out, the topmast had better be struck; the fore or main-topmast got up and down; the fore part of the foremast for a derrick, previous to bousing the fore-runners well taut, and securing the foremast.
We were induced to mention the subject of striking topmasts before taking out a bowsprit, from having seen a vessel do so, with her top-gallant masts only struck; her fore-topmast stays being secured to the bumpkin ends.
All the support that you can possibly give to a foremast, with the bowsprit out, is really so much up and down, that it would be desirable to strike both topmasts for fear of a breeze, as the main-topmast, if left up, must bring an increased strain on the foremast head.
