The bowtie nanoantenna consists of two triangular pieces of gold, each about 75 nanometers long, whose tips face each other in the shape of a miniature bowtie.
In addition to nano-scale optical imaging, Moerner says that bowties may be useful in photopolymerization, a process that uses light to create synthetic compounds (polymers), which researchers can use to trap nano-particles and place them in specific locations.
Bowties also may have applications in Raman spectroscopy, a technique that allows scientists to identify individual molecules by measuring the vibrational energy the molecule emits when exposed to light.

 Bowtie Effect in Diamonds
The Bowtie Effect refers to a shadow that can be seen in some Fancy shaped diamonds, such as Marquise, Pear and Oval (there is a similar effect found in the Heart shape, but it is not actually a bowtie).
When these are all angled and proportioned correctly, the bowtie effect will be minimized, as the light is reflected and refracted within the diamond so as to diffuse the area that is in shadow.
However, it is important to remember that the bowtie effect is not determined by the pavilion angle alone.

The SS is the same as the bowtie except for the badge.
I could be mistaken, but I *think* the grille itself is different in that the SS grille is shaped like an "SS" emblem behind where the badge goes on, and the bowtie grille is shaped like a "bowtie" behind where the badge goes on.
In other words, if you put an "SS" badge on the bowtie grille instead, it would be attached to what looks like a bowtie behind it, and vice versa.
