In an in-line engine the crankshaft is affixed to the crankcase by five main bearing caps bolted to the crankcase in a distance of only eleven inches (this puts a main bearing every two inches).
The heads (there are two in a boxer engine) are made from lightweight cast-aluminum alloy for quick even warm-up with the crankcase and to aid in combustion-chamber cooling efficiency.

Pete, I had to laugh when you said it took three people to replace the engine hood, I had the same situation, me, the owner and a neighbor girl, she was the other person I could round up at the time.
Boxers seem to eat the inside boots, the exhaust heat I think is the problem.

The engine is placed slightly in front of the axles because the transmission sits transversely between the engine and the driver so the axles aren't at an excessive angle.
Subaru's design emphasizes the low placement of their boxer engine to promote a low center of gravity (better handling) as well as a certain amount of passenger safety (the engine will drop beneath the cabin in the event of a serious collision).
I guess the unique engine design, as well as the packaging of their transmission and all-wheel drive components (transfer case, etc) sets the engine a little ahead of the wheels.

The opposing cyclinder "boxer" design allows the engine to sit lower in the car to lower the center of gravity and it vibrate less at WOT because the pistons motions are cancelling each other out.
If you are hearing ticking noises coming from either side of the engine compartment (where the cylinder heads are located), I'd guess you are hearing either the valves/lifters or the normal sound of the fuel injectors.
I noticed how the boxer engine feels "rough" but it doesn't bother me. I hear the lifter tick or the FI tick, whichever it is, and it doesn't bother me because my 3000GT done the same thing and it was the lash adjusters.
