That engine was later used on the Alfa Romeo Arna (a joint venture with Nissan), the Alfa Romeo 33, the Alfa Romeo Sprint and the Alfa Romeo 145/146.
The Ferrari flat 12 boxer engine was first used on their Formula One cars of the late 1960's.
Porsche used the VW engine in the early Porsche 356.

In an in-line engine the crankshaft is affixed to the crankcase by five main bearing caps bolted to the crankcase in a distance of only eleven inches (this puts a main bearing every two inches).
The heads (there are two in a boxer engine) are made from lightweight cast-aluminum alloy for quick even warm-up with the crankcase and to aid in combustion-chamber cooling efficiency.

Flat engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A flat engine is an internal combustion engine with its pistons parallel to the ground.
Boxer engines of up to eight cylinders have proved highly successful in both automobiles and motorcycles, and continue to be popular for light aircraft engines.
These engines can run very smoothly and free of vibrations with a four-stroke cycle, regardless of number of cylinders, and do not require a balance shaft or counterweights on the crankshaft to balance the weight of the reciprocating parts which are required in other engine configurations.

Engine layout in which the cylinders are arranged in a row, and in-line with the wheels of the machine.
V Twin engines are designed in different amounts of degrees (measured from the middle of each piston to piston), the further apart the angle is, the smoother than engine becomes without loosing and advantages over the narrower V Twin designs.
While the Boxer twin engine was a good design in day (1960), BMW has taken the design a step further today and is now much improved in RPM range and can be found in their new sport bikes along with the In-line four.

Of all the motorcycle engines produced, one of the most efficient and successful is the BMW flat twin, or as it is better known, the Boxer engine.
Because of it's opposed cylinder layout the "Boxer" as it was dubbed, turns the crankshaft in line with the motorcycle (or airplane!) This allows for a straight-through shaft connection from the engine, through the gearbox, and through a stainless steel driveshaft to a rear wheel final drive gear in the wheel hub.
BMW’s engine specialists also realised, however, that while the Boxer in its conventional form is most certainly a very muscular, sporting machine, it is still several thousand revs away from the ideal cruiser engine in the true sense of the word.

As seen, no matter where the crankshaft rotates to, the boxer engine has the pair of pistons always in opposite positions, directions and speeds, thus all the forces can be balanced.
Since the 80s, car engineers regard 4-pot engines larger than 2 litres in capacity had better to be equipped with twin-balancer shafts to dampen the vibration.
Obviously, the solution is the same as 3-pot engines, that is, employ a balancer shaft on which there are counter weights moving in the opposite direction to the pistons.

Boxer engines are actually one of the best ways to build an engine, if all external factors allow it.
These engines became popular in F1 because of the low point of gravity, and the average production costs, but later on disappeared out of the picture as this type of engine is not sufficiently stiff enough to whitstand the car's G-forces in cornering conditions.

The engine is placed slightly in front of the axles because the transmission sits transversely between the engine and the driver so the axles aren't at an excessive angle.
Subaru's design emphasizes the low placement of their boxer engine to promote a low center of gravity (better handling) as well as a certain amount of passenger safety (the engine will drop beneath the cabin in the event of a serious collision).
I guess the unique engine design, as well as the packaging of their transmission and all-wheel drive components (transfer case, etc) sets the engine a little ahead of the wheels.

BMW gave its "R" series of Boxers a thorough reworking in 2005 by upgrading many of the series with the latest-generation Flat-Twin powerplant that boasts a healthy increase in power that came along with 50cc extra and other engine-tune mods.
The manufacturer is careful to note that peak numbers were measured while the engine was running on premium fuel, but BMW is also quick to assure that due to the CAN-bus engine management in conjunction with automatic choke, idle speed and anti-knock controls, the new engine will run just fine with lower-grade gas.
The importance of the new Boxer engine extends into the suspension, where the Flat-Twin is utilized as a load-bearing unit in the two-piece frame.

Subaru and Porsche, however, produce boxer engines, and what they are is that the cylinders are all inline, but half of the cylinders move in the opposite direction of the other half of the cylinders.
For example, Subaru produces a boxer-four engine which has two cylinders on one side of the engine and the other two cylinders on the other side of engine, and in the middle is the crankshaft.
Other engines, such as lawnmowers and boat engines, are two-stroke, and they basically have the intake and combustion in the first stroke, and exhaust in the second stroke.

What is a boxer engine? - Answerbag.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
A flat engine or boxer engine or horizontally opposed engine is a type of engine where the pistons lie horizontally opposed, with pairs of cylinders on the left and the right, as opposed to most modern engines where the alternating pistons are positioned in a "V"-angle.
The benefit of using a boxer engine versus a V engine is that it provides perfect balance because each piston's movement is exactly counterbalanced by the corresponding piston movement of the opposite side.
However, boxer engines are also wider than normal engines and are more expensive to build than traditional engines and, thus, are not widely used by automobile manufacturers.
