Egan was born in England, probably in 1772.
A history of boxing containing biographical sketches of fighters, round-by-round descriptions of fights, and other information about the sport and its participants, the work was issued in monthly paperbound sections and sold by subscription.
By 1813, enough material had been issued to create the first book-length volume, and, by 1829, Egan published Boxiana as a five-volume set with an additional volume contributed by Jon Bee (John Babcock).

Boxiana; or Sketches of Ancient and Modern Pugilism; From the Days of the Renowned Broughton and Slack, to the Heroes of the Present Milling Era!
Entitled Boxiana, Egan’s book was published in serial form between the years of 1811 and 1813.
Egan writes, “It has been the leading feature of BOXIANA to expose the sophisticated attempts of those writers who have endeavoured not only to traduce the Patrons of Pugilism, but to annihilate, if possible, the practice of the manly art of self-defence” (242).

It was readily apparent that this young lad had a talent for fisticuffs, and he soon came to utilize his skills for pay in the manly art of self defense, otherwise known as prizefighting or boxing.
It was in this new land that Hamed found himself in a life and death struggle against an aging, but still formidable warrior named Kevin Kelly, also known as the “Flushing Flash.” Three times each fighter would taste the canvas in their memorable battle, but it would be Hamed who emerged as the victor.
Some of Boxiana was ready to anoint this newcomer King of Featherweights, while still others reserved judgment, pointing out that this Prince still had glaring deficiencies in his armor.

It is also reported as appearing, slightly earlier, in Boxiana by Pierce Egan, 1821.
Boxiana is a classic work on boxing history and folklore, and just the place to look for such a reference.
It isn't easy to obtain copies of it these days though, so that hasn't been confirmed here as yet.

Notes From the Great Chronicler of the Silver Age of Boxing - December 15, 2004 - The New York Sun
An end-of-the-millennium poll by Sports Illustrated ranked it the no.1 sports book of all time - which is remarkable because only a quarter of a century ago, just before Raymond Sokolov's Liebling biography "The Wayward Reporter" helped revive his reputation, neither "The Sweet Science" nor a single other one of Liebling's books was in print.
That Liebling's masterpiece - the subtitle of which, "Boxing and Boxiana: A Ringside View" is curiously omitted in the new North Point Press edition (288 pages, $15) - has not only endured but prevailed is testament to the power of word of mouth.
Like Ring Lardner's in the previous generation, Liebling collections didn't sell because most of the audience interested had already read them in magazine form (in Liebling's case, in the New Yorker in the mid-1950s).

So he plays inevitability against shock, which is a wonderful thing.
Not only that, his central animating conceit seems to me a masterstroke because the Pandoran box becomes a CORNUCOPIA: looking for signs among the boxiana we develop a habit we try to apply to the world at large, to the rest of the dichotomy and so find the world, oddly, become a symbol of itself.
In other words, having learned to hunt for signs, we never get enough, which means there is no symbol after all (a bit implying the whole, that old synedoche), but only the world equated with itself.
