Boxing Helena - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Boxing Helena is the 1993 debut feature film by Jennifer Lynch, daughter of David Lynch.
After she is injured in a grievous hit-and-run motor vehicle accident in front of his home, he kidnaps and treats her in his house surreptitiously, which includes medically amputating both of her legs.
Even though Helena is the victim of Nick's kidnapping and mutilation, she dominates the dialogue with her constant emasculating ridicule of him for all of his shortcomings.

(Un) Boxing Helena: A preliminary feminist and psychoanalytic analysis (Jeffrey Compton, M.A.)
Each is ill in a way: Helena is neurotic in her pursuit of the cult of beauty whereby she is fulfilled as a woman while Nick is psychotic in his desire to sexually satisfy her and gain self-worth as a man, to the extent that he will go to do so.
Helena herself is captivated by beauty, such as in the scene where she stands transfixed momentarily in front of the statue of the Venus de Milo.
However in Boxing Helena this is not the case for the female spectator (all spectators for that matter) for when we go below the surface of the image we see that the visual and narrative discourse is in fact intended primarily for her, the female spectator.

Helena is beautiful, but she is such a bitch it's impossible to tell what he sees in her.
That Helena actually comes to live with her predicament seems to suggest that a woman may not mind being wholly dependent on a man, and worse, might enjoy being an object of art, even if it means severe mutilation.

Helena never actually gets put in a box, although her captor does prop her up in a sort of three-sided shrine for a while (which serves the obvious purpose of hiding the actress's arms and legs).
Helena tries to embarrass Nick by taking off her dress and frolicking in the fountain in her lacy undergarments, after which she leaves to do naughty things with another party guest.

And so limbless Helena ends up in her box, more like a squatty throne on Nick's dining room table, where she's plopped as sort of a gutter-mouthed centerpiece.

His courtship only invites scorn - but, when Helena is hit by a car outside his family mansion, the doc sees a chance to cut her down to size.
Lynch in her first stab at directing tries for the fl-comic, blue velvet knife-edge between surrealism and perversity, but the results - neither graphic, nor gruesome - are simply incongruous.

Plot: Surgeon Nick Cavanaugh is obsessed with the beautiful but bitchy Helena, although she persistently rejects his advances.
The most Lynch manages is a couple of shocks upon the revelation of each of Helena's progressive stages of limblessness - but all one sees of that is Fenn without her arms in her sleeves or legs beneath her night-gown.
Lynch pere would have undoubtedly jumped in with scenes of Fenn trying to escape by crawling on her limbless stumps or of Julian Sands making love to her amputated body, but Jennifer has a very, very different film than that in mind.
