Nicky Line - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Construction proceeded extremely slowly, the lower spur from Boxmoor to Hemel Hempstead only being completed by 1871, though the connection to Boxmoor was via an awkward turntable arrangement.
Following nationalisation of the railways, the connection of the lines at Boxmoor which had so long been a bone of contention was finally resolved, the connection being made to allow coal trains to supply the nearby gasworks at Duckhall.
The course of the connection from Boxmoor is discernable in places; the gasholders at Duckhall are still present and the boundaries delineate the curve of the original trackbed.

Hemel Hempstead railway station is on the West Coast Main Line, on the western edge of Hemel Hempstead, in an area called Boxmoor.
For many years, Hemel Hempstead station was almost a junction - a railway embankment on the south (down) side of the station led to the end of the Nicky Line, a branch line through the town centre to Harpenden.
However, due to arguments between the Midland Railway and the London and North Western Railway, no direct connection was made between the two lines.

 Snooks's Grave, Boxmoor Common
It is possible that during his early career he worked as an ostler at the King's Arms, Berkhamsted and, if so, his employer, John Page, was destined to meet him in an official capacity at his eventual execution.
In 1800 he was known to be living in Hertfordshire at Hemel Hempstead, and in consequence he would have had the opportunity to become familiar with movements on and around Boxmoor Common.
However, the period for such grisly displays was drawing to a close and after a petition by the residents of Boxmoor, the selected location, this was commuted to a straightforward execution.
