Two years after the treaty was signed the county was established and named in honor of James E. Boyd, who was governor at the time the legislative bill organizing the county was approved.
The county seat of Butte is said to have received its name from a rocky area south of the town that was thought to have been formed by deposits from an iceberg that moved through the area centuries before.

Boyd's letter reflected the alarm that was felt by many Georgians that winter, the bright prospects of an easy victory had faded quickly the previous summer after the costly success at Mannassa.
Wier Boyd, now gravely ill in a hospital at Macon, Georgia, was examined by surgeons and found to be unfit for duty to "disease of the kidneys and liver." Boyd submitted his resignation on November 1st.

The county was created in 1860 from parts of Greenup, Carter, and Lawrence counties and named for Linn Boyd of Paducah, former U.S. congressman, who died in 1859 soon after being elected lieutenant governor of Kentucky.

 CASDE | Spencer -- Boyd County
In April 1891 after the State Legislature had enacted a law to organize the newly adquired territory into Boyd County, U.S.Adams and Sanford Parker of O'Neill toured the area.
There was already a 14 by 16 foot saloon run by Bill Stearns, a soddy or two, and a wagon load of lumber to be used to build a store was in the yard.
The school was remodeled in 1920 and served until 1966, when county schools consolidated with larger town schools, causing an overflow of pupils.

Located in Boyd County, this archeological site has the potential to provide information regarding the life of the Ponca people at a specific period in time, during which a process of forced acculturation and rapid change to reservation life was introduced in the midst of extreme climatic conditions and struggles with Sioux invaders.
Flowing west to east across nearly the entire width of Boyd County, Ponca Creek formed a troublesome barrier to intercounty traffic.
The school is significantly associated with parochial education in Boyd County, as it was the only Catholic elementary school built in the county.

ASHLAND, KY -- In arguments held in federal court yesterday and today, the American Civil Liberties Union is asking a federal judge to order that all clubs at Boyd County High School, including the Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), can meet.
The ACLU argued that the Board of Education's decision to ban all clubs is an unconstitutional attempt to shut out students who sought to form the GSA and violates federal and state law.
On December 20, the Boyd County Board of Education took the extraordinary step of suspending all clubs in all schools K-12 in an effort to prevent approximately 30 students from forming a GSA at Boyd County High School.
