Boyracer   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Boyracer hailed from the fertile musical ground of Leeds, England, the same scene that spawned Hood, The Wedding Present, Sisters of Mercy, and, yes, Scary Spice.
Part of Boyracer's greatness was that they were not afraid to experiment with musical styles outside of the pop realm.
"Michael," from Boyracer's the 1996 Slumberland EP We Are Made of the Same Wood, is reminiscent of early Wedding Present, but it also includes touches of Polvo's powerful bending guitar, punk rock's energy and brevity (the song is only two minutes long!), and even some harmonica flair.

Luna Kafé - Boyracer: A Punch up the Bracket   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Boyracer have been making ungodly fast-strummed pop and sort of punk music for a decade or more now, sliding completely under the rader, even evading the likes of Brian Knox and Chris Hutelmyer.
I wonder if this new Boyracer album will be able to reach the teenagery highs of previous efforts.
My recommendation is to buy an old Boyracer and hear a higher concentration of the awesome pop-strumming and ultra-catchy songs.

In Full Colour - Boyracer - Music Reviews   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Boyracer's last official release before the band split up, In Full Colour, is a fitting summation of the many styles with which the band dabbled throughout their prolific career.
Boyracer, like many indie bands, shined brightest on their many 7" releases and compilation tracks.
On a full-length CD (and especially one with 20 tracks), the subtle emotional territory in which Boyracer songs live is sometimes lost among the variety.

erasing clouds music review: boyracer, punker than you since '92
Boyracer have been punker than you since '92, if not before, though not in the way you might think.
Since '92 Boyracer has amassed quite a body of work, an impressive geography of noise and melody and sadness and anger and hope and heartbreak and sweat and some more noise.
It's all part of the same stream, anyway, and it's all pretty damn fantastic — as infectious and moving and invigorating as you'd want music to be.

CD Baby: BOYRACER: Abscence Makes The Heart Grow Harder
For almost 15 years, Boyracer have existed around the singular pop visions of Stewart Anderson.
Armed with a fuzzbox and a carefree revolving door line up, (of nearly 40 members past and present!), Boyracer have been transatlantically crafting their buzzsaw assault, shaving seconds off already manic slithers of melodic adrenaline punkpop though sweaty live shows and an exhaustive completist's nightmare discography.
Noted recordings on indie-cred labels such as Sarah Records and Slumberland have cemented Boyracer's place in global indiedom as influential stalwarts of the genre.

Go Boyracer, go (Metro Times Detroit)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
More importantly, Boyracer remains true to the ideal of booking their own gigs and putting out their own music, while slowly being recognized for their live energy and catchy start-stop pop structure that barely lasts for more than two minutes per song.
And although their 2001 tour of the United States was littered with a handful of bumps, canceled gigs and broken bones, Boyracer’s saga is more than the run-of-the-mill bad-luck story.
Whether it’s going on tour for the sake of playing out or abruptly changing their musical direction for an EP or two (they’ve occasionally delved into electronic noise), they have years worth of material to go on and nothing is stopping ’em now.

Boyracer has managed to earn a reputation not only for being the loud, fuzzed out, love at first listen indie pop band they always have been but also for their wild, crazy, smash it to bits live performances that draw in more and more crowds with every show.
Though fans always have an idea what to expect, no one is ever bored or standing still at a Boyracer show.
This new album, alot like their live show, will impress even the most educated Boyracer fan and is sure to serve up more of the same insane pop goodness that has made Boyracer the indie pop heroes they are today.

It’s also somewhat of a leap for them artistically though not a departure by any means: there are a few acoustic pop songs to be found here — somehow even those are noisy — and more complex rhythms than we’ve heard from them in the past.
Boyracer is an institution unto themselves, much like GBV was before them and much like Sonic Youth is now, but on a substantially smaller scale.
If you liked this post, A Punch Up The Bracket, the eighth LP from prolific trans-Atlantic transplanted British twee-pop band Boyracer, has been out for a few months now on their very own 555 Recordings.

LEFT OFF THE DIAL - Album Reviews - Boyracer: To Get a Better Hold, You've Got to Loosen Yr Grip
Boyracer has been around since 1990, consistently producing transcendent fuzzed-out pop, but their newest album isnt even listed on the supposedly omniscient All Music Guide, and I have yet to see it in any store.
On the surface, every Boyracer song sounds the same: the crackling and compressed DIY recordings, the frantically strummed acoustic guitar completely immersed in feedback and white noise cymbals, the nasal megaphone voice, the British accent, female backup vox, and occasional xylophone or drum machine to mix it up.
But all this simply means that while other bands waste their time trying to play 400 different genres adequately, Boyracer concentrates on playing one genre impeccably.

Staunch Northern nationalists, Boyracer show their political stripes with their new call to arms, in full colour.
At a time when London-bound former Mancunians flaunt their "outside" status whilst making every scene in Camden, Boyracer wouldn't be caught dead in the NW1 postcode, own no Oasis records (except for Ged the drummer, and he's got terrible taste in music), and tirelessly spread the word: The North must be free.

One of the toughest things for me to do is admit when one of my favorite bands makes an underwhelming album...which is why you won’t find a review of Boyracer’s 2004 full-length Happenstance on this website.
However, there were a number of flaws that kept me from latching onto it as quickly as I did to previous Boyracer releases.
Bands as prolific as Boyracer, regardless of how many awesome songs they have lying around, often have trouble organizing them into cohesive full-lengths.

Leeds' Boyracer isn't slated to be featured on Children of Nuggets, but given these guys' resume, which includes a colossal number of releases and nearly 15 years of garage punk gems, they would certainly make a logical choice.
The album is the aural equivalent of mainlining nine pixie sticks, a box of Butterfinger BBs, two Sparks (the new caffeinated alcohol beverage that's popular among truckers and third-shift factory workers), and running around your room in circles like a dog trying to escape a laundry basket.
While the raw innocence may seem forced and childish by lesser artists (especially ones who are at least in their thirties), it feels completely authentic in Boyracer's music.

They've had records released by a few labels which have the reputation of being cute and twee; and they're generally looked upon as sounding the same as a lot of the other bands on these labels.
Of course, anyone with even the slightest amount of brain-cells would be able to tell that Boyracer aren't cute, twee or jangly, and I thought I'd ask Stewart Boyracer what he thinks about it all.
Stewart Boyracer and Eric Hula Hoop have had two singles out under the name of HULABOY, which were "Mermaid Sister" (on Meller Welle) and "Slip It Inside" (on Sticky).

DOA - Boyracer - A Punch up the Bracket
Well for starters, Boyracer serves up a high-pressure system of the band's trademark bare-bones and rowdy indie-punk, recorded in classic, and tinny, lo-fi style.
When the pleasant and poppy three-chord fuzz-pop is coupled with Turrell's riot-grrrl vocal stylings, the results are downright toe-tappin' and head-bangin' at the same time.
But too often the music lulls as Boyracer's artists temper their aggressiveness with the calming influence of the expansive and dry American west, resulting in something that resembles an accelerated but less complex Meat Puppets, especially when Anderson takes to the mic.

The more recordings Boyracer releases, the more I understand how someone could become an obsessive Boyracer collector, hunting down every song and recording no matter how obscure (every last cassette, lathe cut 7", split EP and compilation track).
The more I hear, the more I want to hear, and that's especially the case with Insults and Insights, a firecracker disguised as an EP.
In their own, beautifully messy way, Boyracer are jacks-of-all-trades, using whatever tool it takes, be it melody or feedback, to fill a song with raw, genuine feeling.

But not pop punk with like the general view of pop punk with silly mall punk bands but a kind of pop-ish punk that is all their own, kind of like how Beat Happening was doing their kind of pop-punk thing all on their own course from anything else.
Maybe this is what you get if the Silly Pillows were on too much speed, candy, and distortion, that's what Boyracer sounds like on this album.
And some songs were recorded in Huntington, W.V. which is odd, I am wondering how they got there of all places.

Indie pop stalwarts Boyracer have been crafting their own brand of intensely catchy pop for quite some time now and the Insults and Insights EP is the latest chapter in their long and complicated discography.
Here the band treats us to eight short lo-fi tunes injected with countless hooks and plenty of youthful playing.
Overall, this is a bit of an unspectacular outing for Boyracer; though perfectly serviceable and pleasant for fans of the band - or lovers of quality indie pop in general - I kind of wanted more.

I whipped up the design in a little over an hour using artwork from their CDs, and Chris put the whole thing together.

Sixty-two matches down, two to go, and although the last two are momentous and could well be memorable, I'm already disengaging emotionally and starting to sort through the detritus of a month spent watching television in the middle of the night.
Any attempt to get from Boyracer to anything else, however, will have to be essayed with Boyracer themselves, stubbornly still extant, plunging their collective tongue into your ear up to the stirrup and then suffering a simultaneous sneezing fit, epileptic seizure and throat-singing rehearsal.
Stewart may be hopeless in concert (and I've only seen him once, so even that might be an anomaly), but under laboratory conditions he retains just enough of his faculties to put together recorded songs with sporadically discernible structure.
