The Boys of the Lough - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Boys of the Lough are one of the longest-surviving Celtic bands.
The two halves met at Falkirk folk festival in Scotland, and formed The Boys of the Lough.
Their first album, called Boys of the Lough (1972) consisted of Aly Bain (fiddle), Cathal McConnell (flute), Dick Gaughan (vocals and guitar) and Robin Morton (flute).

 Ernest Lough (Boy Soprano)
Ernest Arthur Lough was born on November 11th 1911 and entered the choir of the Temple Church in 1923.
One of Lough's records, I will sing of Thy great Mercies O Lord was never issued at the time due to the fact that his voice had broken before a track for the reverse of the disc could be recorded.
Lough never let his fame go to his head and like so many other Temple boys, he always attributed his success to his mentor and Choirmaster, the legendary ‘Doctor’ as Sir George Thalben-Ball was known.

Boys of the Lough - PopMatters Concert Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The Boys of the Lough are a rare example of longevity in the world of Celtic music.
In spite of their lineup changes, the Boy of the Lough retain their spark, an originality in sound that is immediately identifiable, and their humor -- Groucho Marx himself would have been proud of such absurdity, such clever language play, such vocal slapstick.
Whether reviving "Farewell Lovely Nancy", a song which appeared on the Boys' second album and again as a newer version on their latest, or giving a new interpretation of the night visiting song, "I Drew My Ship", there is a melancholy freshness to his vocals which leaves you craving more.

Well the Boys did neither, choosing to rely on the youth policy and bring off the bench a young and comparatively unknown fiddler Iain MacFarlane from Glenfinnan and give the more-than capacity crowd an evening to remember.
Not having seen the Boys in action since John Coaxkley left, my immediate impression is of the drive generated by guitarist Newman.
Cathal is described as knowing Riverdance when it was only a trickle; Christy and Chris duet superbly as the rest of the boys go off 'to have their blood changed' and Ian comes back to steal the show with a couple of Glenfinnan tunes.
