In the News (Wed 30 May 12)

Boze Hadleigh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Boze Hadleigh (born 1954) is an American journalist, interviewer and writer primarily of gossip about homosexuals of Hollywood.
Hadleigh's book Hollywood Gays is a report on interviews with prominent film personalities, such as Liberace, Anthony Perkins, Randolph Scott, and several others, most of them widely known as homosexual.
Boze Hadleigh appeared on Jeopardy once as a contestant.

Books: Backstage Diving (Newcity Chicago . 05-26-98)
Unfortunately, Hadleigh flits about among not-so-juicy tidbits, largely focused on stars who were big decades ago.
Hadleigh's writing style wants to be chatty and catty, but is instead flighty, flat and uncohesive.
Hadleigh could take some lessons from NPR contributor Bruce Feiler, who expertly employs three subjects (superstar Garth Brooks, evolving diva Wynonna and rising hat-wearer Wade Hayes) to illustrate "the changing face of Nashville" in his book "Dreaming Out Loud," an above-board and behind-the-scenes look at contemporary country music.

Kay Francis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
She died of cancer at the age of 63 on August 26, 1968, in New York City and left most of her substantial estate to support the provision of guide dogs for the blind.
Francis married three times, and was involved in numerous well publicized affairs, but rumors of lesbianism followed her both during her life and since; Marjorie Main told author Boze Hadleigh when he interviewed her for his book on Hollywood lesbians: "I always heard she was queer for the ladies."
Her diaries, preserved in an academic collection at Wesleyan University paint an affecting picture of a woman whose personal life was often in disarray and, at least in published excerpts, emphasize a strong attraction to men.

Positioned as a sequel of sorts to Hadleigh's earlier collection of interviews with gay men in Hollywood, Conversations with My Elders (1987), this volume is both less and more than it seems.
Of course, when she didn't agree to meet him for a subsequent interview, he patronizingly sniffed that she was ashamed to talk about her sexuality.
Patsy Kelly was downright lewd in her description of her intimate life with Tallulah Bankhead and, while Hadleigh obviously favored her the most for her spilling the beans, I thought her attitude was somewhat self-pitying and downright misandristic!

Marjorie Main - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
She was later a open lesbian, and was one of Boze Hadleigh's most open interviewees in his book Hollywood Lesbians (1996).
Her own lover was Spring Byington with whom she lived openly in Beverly Hills, and which might have surprised many people given Byington's near constant casting in sweetly maternal roles.
Main died in Los Angeles, California, of lung cancer at the age of 85.

So it's surprising that Boze Hadleigh's selection of candid interviews with prominent members of the Hollywood community is not more widely known.
Hadleigh has spent the last thirty-odd years interviewing gay movie-makers who have kept their sexuality either an open secret within the industry or tightly under wraps on the condition that the interviews are not published until after their deaths.
It may be old news today, but Hadleigh's book, along with his other collections (including the less subtle 'Hollywood Gays' and 'Hollywood Lesbians' volumes) still fascinate and are a poignant reminder that whilst there may be the odd Anne Heche or Joel Schumacher today, nothing's really changed.

Hadleigh and Busch seem very obsessed with Davis herself and touch up on the actress as opposed to aspects of the filmmaking process.
While he does touch up on other actors from the film, Hadleigh spends most of the time focusing on Bette Davis being that her life is his topic of choice.
This is quite interesting when Hadleigh offers up pieces of interesting trivia, but his obsession with the actress becomes slightly exhausting.

Boze Hadleigh, a long time student of Hollywood and film culture, has written Hollywood Gays (Barricade Books/hardback, 384 pages).
The book which is now in its second big printing is an interdisciplinary approach to the homosexual subculture based upon interviews, commentary, solid research, and oral history (in Hollywood otherwise known as gossip).
These actors and others who are interviewed discuss their sex lives and those of their fellow film stars.

Written in Boze Hadleigh's uniquely gossipy style, this informal history covers every era and genre of music, and includes the inside story on hundreds of major artists.
Examining a variety of performers, Hadleigh looks at stars who spent years concealing their sexuality, those who came out with a shout, as well as those who emerged from the closet only to creep back in some time later.

Given that, what makes these interviews so surprising is that, cukor aside (he was rather coy), the subjects talk freely and frankly about their lives and their careers, and how their sexuality affected both.
Hadleigh is forthright in his questions, and if he doesn't always get straight answers, his conversations are full of wit, gossip and acute observations on society -- its hungers as well as its hypocrisies.
In his new preface, he reflects on the response to this book 15 years ago and how attitudes toward homosexuality have and have ot changed since then.

Hadleigh undeniably knows a lot about movies, but his credibility as a writer-historian has frequently been called into question, especially for his alleged conversations with famous (and, by the time of publication, dead) stars for two widely discredited books: Hollywood Gays and Hollywood Lesbians.
Fortunately, Hadleigh's name-dropping and quotes from his supposed interviews are kept to a minimum, and mostly he and Busch offer trivia and make good observations about the picture.

Bette Davis fans will purr with delight at the page after page of her very clever, clawing (and cutting) comments about costars and contemporaries that veteran movie-scene reporter Hadleigh elicited in interviews dating from 1975 to the year Davis died, 1989.
At appropriate junctures, Hadleigh also briefly queries many Davis associates (producer David Lewis, costar Peter Lawford, husband-costar Gary Merrill, etc.) about her to complete a funny, revealing, and confrontational Hollywood read that must be reckoned one of the best for the fans in many a year.
In a collection of interviews with the author, conducted from the mid-1970s until her death, the legendary actress shares her candid views on her four husbands and various lovers, her costars and rivals, her films, and the difficulties of aging.
