Bra-ket notation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bra-ket notation is the standard notation for describing quantum states in the theory of quantum mechanics.
The notation is justified by the Riesz representation theorem, which states that a Hilbert space and its dual space are isometrically isomorphic.
This is something of an abuse of notation, though a fairly common one.

I've noted that while Dirac's Bra and Ket notation is addressed, there is both a spelling omission and Dirac's "c number", which accounts for the omitted letter referenced.
A complete bra and ket notation discussion actually should reference a number c which goes between the bra and ket.
I'm not sure if this is just a different notation, but I believe the "plane waves" eigenstates of the momentum operator are denoted 〈xp〉 rather than 〈xx〉 which would be some strange delta function concotion.

In element, the notation of the symbol is written inside the element.
To generate the notation of the symbol in element, the editor requires input for the notation as well as an OpenMath expression.
As the notation structure in element uses XPath to point the arguments of the OpenMath objects, we have provided in the editor a scheme for naming the arguments/identifiers to calculate the XPath, i.e.

Re: Who coined the terms "bra" and "ket"?
You claimed (deleted) that the braket notation is not useful without the symmetry property; but Harry showed that is wrong by pointing out how else it's useful.
On the other hand, restricting the braket to Hermitean operators is a vast contraction in flexibility.
Unless someone has been taught that brakets are used only with Hermitean operators, the notion of something acting *on the right* should be so foreign that they'd work it out carefully.

Maybe the most disturbing issue would be the notation since in 1932 dirac had still not developed the bracket formalism.
First the strengths: (1) The author gives a rigorous proof of the incompatibility of the two theories of quantum mechanics, that is, the evolution of the state vector as determined by Schrodinger's equation and the collapse of the state vector by means of an observation.

To shorten the notation, I defined an auxiliary function \layermath, which adds a layer of \hbox to a math expression, and the following (final!) version of \braket, and a couple more trivial analogous commands dealing with "bra"s and "ket"s.
However, it is quite inefficient, due to the fact that each of the arguments is typeset 8 (!) times to produce a \braket.
I suppose that this could be improved by storing them in boxes during processing, but the arguments are typically small so I didn't worry about it.

The linear algebra taught to undergraduates - and a lot of simple, practical mathematics that isn't taught to undergraduates largely for historical reasons (Hamilton bound vectors to 4 dimensions, Gibbs later bound them to 3 dimensions, failing to emphasize the generality of Grassmann's invention) - is presented simply and cleanly.
Dirac's famous braket notation, quantum logic (introduced by Birkhoff and von Neumann in 1935), the modern definitions of dimension, orthogonality, ordering, and the meets and joins of lattice theory, can all be found here.
Many of these ideas are written in the same notation and language we use today, and could be found stated identically in a modern text on geometric algebra.
